PA - Michael Haines, 31, slain in armored car robbery, Pittsburgh, 28 Feb 2012

    http://www.wbtv.com/story/17048094/d...ed-car-partner

PITTSBURGH (AP) - An armored car guard shot his partner to death, left the body in the back of the truck and vanished with more than $2 million in cash, authorities said Wednesday.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. said Wednesday that he intends to charge 22-year-old Kenneth Konias Jr., of Dravosburg with first-degree murder in the death of fellow Garda Cash Logistics guard Michael Haines, of East McKeesport.

Haines was found fatally shot in the back of the truck when it was found idling under a bridge in Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon. The truck had picked up money from the Rivers Casino shortly before 9 a.m. that day and was found about 3:40 p.m., after the guards had made several stops elsewhere, police said.......

Homicide detectives went to the home where Konias lived with his parents Tuesday evening and found his bloody uniform jacket in his bedroom.

Stangrecki said Konias' family is cooperating with the investigation and weren't aware that the jacket was bloody or about anything else when Konias went home Tuesday.
    ---------

Stangrecki said investigators notified Pittsburgh International Airport and officials at various transportation agencies as well as U.S. border authorities to be alert for Konias. Authorities believe Konias may have two guns - his service pistol and another hand gun, and Zappala told reporters, "We are trying to stress how dangerous this individual is."

"We want everybody looking for him."

This is a terrible story. $2 million will not go as far as this ruthless traitor thinks it will. I wonder how long he worked for the guard company, and how long he had been partners with the man he murdered. I am hopeful the killer will be caught soon. I'm certain the major crimes LE is all over the perp's past and will be able to track him down. I can't believe he would think he could get away with this crime.

based on his phonecall to his friend, in which he expresses regret and asks about extradition laws in Canada and Mexico, I believe he did not plan very well and will be caught soon

I hope he didn't make it across any border

This may be a repeat of link above but they have changed the description of the vehicle:

According to investigators, it was first believed that Konias was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer. However, Pittsburgh police say they believe Konias could be driving a tan- or champagne-colored 2006 Ford Explorer. The license plate number is GZW-4572.

On Wednesday, investigators revealed that the shooting may have actually taken place in Ross Township, even though the armored truck was found in the Strip District.

The GARDA company is offering a $100,000 reward for information in the case leading to Konias’ arrest and conviction.

Mother of fugitive guard fears for his safety

..............Mr. Konias is being sought by law enforcement agencies nationwide in the Tuesday slaying of 31-year-old Michael Haines with whom he operated an armored truck for Garda Cash Logistics.

Mrs. Konias said she struggled to reconcile her picture of her son as a popular and mild-mannered young man with the one investigators painted of him as a cold-blooded killer. The FBI on Friday issued a wanted poster describing him as a "violent fugitive" who is dangerous and believed to be armed with at least two semi-automatic pistols, including his partner's 9 mm Glock service weapon.

"That just was not Ken," she said. "He never had a problem with anybody. He didn't have a bad bone in his body. I couldn't have asked for a better kid. The stuff they are saying is crazy."
    ------

Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said Friday that detectives do not believe Mr. Konias has left the country and were checking tips and reported sightings that were increasing as the case gained national attention. They were also continuing interviews with those who may have interacted with him in the past.

"It looks like he may have discussed some plans to do some type of robbery," the commander said. "He may have discussed stealing some money," Cmdr. Stangrecki added, though he would not say in whom Mr. Konias confided or when. "He had talked about coming into a windfall."
    --------

"Even his friends would turn on him for that kind of money," she said, doubtful of what police described as phone calls Mr. Konias made to friends as he fled inquiring about extradition laws in Canada and Mexico.

Police said witnesses told them Mr. Konias admitted in the phone calls to killing a man and said he had enough money never to work again. He ditched the cell phone on Route 51, where it was discovered by a passer-by.

Brandi, I'm also very sorry, it must be so difficult for you and your husband. I feel very confident he will be caught soon. This obviously is not a thought-out crime and what burns me up is he has killed an innocent person in the process.

Mrs. Konias is in crazy denial. Her son didn't have a bad bone in his body my a**. Tell her to go to the funeral home and ask all of the people there crying and missing Mike if they agree. Unbelievable.
I'm sorry but that just irritates me.

Thanks michmi and velouria. Michmi, he killed one of the kindest people. He didn't have to kill him. He could've knocked him out, tied him up and still had time to get away.

I would probably be in crazy denial too. No one wants to believe thier child is capable of these thiings. I don't think she was defending him, she is just having trouble processing this. It has been said the family is cooperating.

Welp, according to this article, the parents of the murderer aren't too well liked by their neighbors. They even sued the mayor for "defamation of character" when their names were submitted as potential contestants for a reality show (about people feuding with their neighbors).

Enough time has gone by where, if he's going to try to drive over a border, he would be doing it now. Someone this young with cash like this might also pop up in Vegas.
