U.S. Coast Guard searches for Canadian lost on cruise
The woman, whose name has not been released, was travelling with her boyfriend on a cruise ship between the Bahamas and Florida when she disappeared sometime early Wednesday.

"Coast Guard crews are searching for a 47-year-old woman who fell overboard off the cruise ship Bahamas Celebration during their transit from Freeport, Bahamas to Palm Beach, Fla., Wednesday," said a statement from the Coast Guard.

This story was featured on HLN tonight and they said the cruise is unsure if she managed to sneak off or if she went overboard. Although the above article states she fell, HLN was not saying this, they were discussing the possibility of her getting off the ship somehow. Prime news said her boyfriend last saw her at 1am on the ship when it was traveling from Bahamas to Florida. When he awoke in the morning after the ship had docked, the girlfriend was gone.

This story more reflects what HLN said

I read the article. How do you sneak off the ship while it's transiting? Or do they mean that she never got on the ship from the Bahamas, since they claim they're only pretty sure she was on board. Don't they have cameras?

"The woman was known to have boarded the ship in Grand Bahama as all passengers must use a swipe card when getting on and off the vessel. "

but...

"Charles Kinnear, president of Celebration Cruise Line, told ABC: 'We've given [investigators] our complete track from when we left Grand Bahama last night, every position that we took during the evening.
'We're still hoping for the best - that somehow she sneaked off the vessel or she is still hiding somewhere'"

If her card was swiped, it doesn't mean SHE was the one who swiped it. This is a very odd story.

This guy's story doesn't add up to me. The ship left Bahamas at 8pm Tuesday. He verified that she was on board at 1am on Wednesday in the gift shop where he went to the casino and then he returned to their room sometime after that and she obviously wasn't there and he became alarmed when he woke up at 8am? Why wasn't he alarmed when he returned from the casino and she wasn't there?

I hope there are lots of surveillence cameras on that ship. If they have surveillence of her in the gift shop, then I'd say something happened between then and 8am and the boyfriend may be involved.

MOO

I'm curious as to why the company seems to keep inferring that someone would attempt to sneak off, or hide? Is this just to cover themselves or am I missing something?

imo, if in fact she did board the boat, there are only a few options, either her own choosing or that of, imo someone close to her.

from link ==> "We believe she did reboard" on Tuesday for her return trip to Florida, the spokesman said.

That disclosure prompted an extensive search of the ship, after which police were notified, according to the cruise line's spokesman.

boyfriend last saw his girlfriend at 1am at a gift ship - he reported her missing 8am.
imo, she either...

1) she did not re board in Bahamas (and boyfriend lied)
2) she sneaked off the ship in fl
3) she is still on the ship and searchers missed finding her
4) she went overboard - either she jumped or she fell or she was tossed over by someone.

could be she was kidnapped and then tossed or perhaps she went willing with someone who then tossed her - maybe by someone who knew where the security camera were and where they were not.

why fbi is involved (per this report)

Glenn Ryerson, spokesman from Celebration Cruise Line, said the woman's male companion, who had been sharing a cabin with her, reported her missing at 8 a.m. Wednesday, after the ship had docked at the Port of Palm Beach in Riviera Beach, Fla.

The entire 350-person crew undertook an "extensive search" for the woman. After failing to find her they alerted local police and the FBI.

Rose Anne Brown, spokeswoman for the Riviera Beach Police said her department received the first notification that someone was missing Wednesday morning but, as the woman disappeared before the ship went through customs, the investigation was turned over to the FBI.

Neither the police, nor the FBI have released the names of the man and woman involved.

Cruise ships have become a dangerous way to travel.....

I could see why he was not that alarmed that she was not there when he returned from the casino. I am sure he didn't expect her to sit in the room while he was out that night. He probably expected that she was watching a show or at the restauarnt/lounge with others and so he went to bed.

I have been on numerous cruises over the past 15 years and never at any time have felt at danger. Like anywhere else you have to be aware of your surroundings and watch out for yourself. I really do not understand how people can disappear over the balconies - no way someone could fall over accidentally. This article states that over 16 million people cruise every year - people go missing - from their home towns. Our their home towns dangerous? LOL - no I don't work for a travel agency.

The man went to sleep and raised the alarm when he woke up and found she still wasn't in their cabin, Kinnear said.

"The way he explains it is he went to the casino and got back to his room," CBS reported Kinnear as saying. "He went to bed, and she still wasn't there. And when he woke up in the morning, she still wasn't there. He walked around the ship for a while before he decided to come and tell us."

So your girlfriend isn't in your room over night...on a two night trip...and you walk around the ship for awhile???????????????????????

So that's that folks! Another person disappears off of a cruise liner, case closed. The next ship must sail, money and fun to be had of course!

Don't get me wrong, I love to cruise but......

Has their ever been a cruise liner case solved???????

Ok, this is so disturbing to me! My husband, 2 kids and myself just got off this same cruise the voyage before this one (on Monday). This ship is not really a cruise, but a ferry. The 2 nights includes the trip over where it drops you off in the Bahamas, where u then stay for a few days, then the one night to get back to FL. As far as her falling off, I don't see how it's possible. There's a 5 foot fence going all the way around all the open deck areas. It would take quite a bit of effort to fall over that fence! It's quite ironic because my husband & I had a conversation about how it would be a "perfect" crime scene because there are absolutely no cameras anywhere and the open deck was completely desolate. As far as the card swiping goes, my husband swiped all 4 of our cards when the three of us were off doing something else. They never checked to make sure we were present or our identities when they swiped our cards or that we even got on the ship. I really hope this lady decided to stay in the Bahamas in hiding, but it seems very suspicious and the fact they stopped looking for her in 24 hours is disgusting in my opinion.

The search consisted of least two coast guard aircraft, four coast guard cutters, a U.S. National Guard aircraft and air and sea rescue crews from the Bahamas covering 18,897 square kilometres. Plus the fact they did not know where she would have gone overboard. I am not sure how long a person could survive in the ocean but I doubt that it would be too long. I think the search was adequate. Very sad deal all around. I am sure she had a bit of help going overboard.
