The child needed surgery for internal injuries.
Her mother hasn't left her side.

A 2-year-old girl is fighting for her life at University of New Mexico Hospital after police said she was badly beaten by her mother's boyfriend.

--------

Officer Rob Gibbs had to step away while talking to the media when he was struck by emotion.

"I'm sorry, I have a 16-month-old at home,"
Gibbs said.

There are some animals that kill offspring of the female if those offspring were fathered by another male. Sad to say some humans sound exactly the same.

Gonzales was recorded on video with a message for his girlfriend as he was being arrested.

"I'm sorry. I love her and the baby, and I don't know what happened," Gonzales said.

An Albuquerque man accused of abusing his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter is being held on a $250,000 cash or surety bond.

Police say the child is suffering from a tear on her liver, bruising around her kidneys, a bruised pancreas and bleeding around her brain.

I feel zero sympathy for this mother, she let her child lie there and suffer for hours

Except... it doesn't sound like law enforcement agrees with you.

I think these cops would have charged her with neglect or anything they could... if they thought that she should have called immediately.
It sounds like the cops believe that she HAD to wait until he fell asleep, or her own life would be in danger. Or her other child. Or this child.

I think these first two charges are for the child and at least the last one, might be for keeping the mother there.

Gonzales is being held on one count of child abuse, one of kidnapping with great bodily harm, aggravated assault against a household member and false imprisonment.

Judging from the charges, they still appear to believe the mother's story...
That he wouldn't allow her to call for help and she had to wait until he passed out.
Given how emotional these officers are about this case... I think they would charge the mother if there was a reason to... :twocents:

Charges:

2 counts of Child Abuse (Intentionally Caused) (Death or Great Bodily Harm)
Child Abuse (Intentionally Caused) (No Death or Great Bodily Harm)
4 counts of Kidnapping (Victim not Freed in Safe Place and/or Physical Injury or Sexual Offense Committed)

Aggravated Assault
(Deadly Weapon)
Interference with Communications

Battery Upon a Peace Officer
Assault Upon a Peace Officer
Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer.

She was found battered and bruised
allegedly by her mother’s boyfriend. The Albuquerque Police Department recently released officer lapel video from the morning of the arrest.

The toddler suffered a torn liver, bruised kidneys and pancreas and possible brain damage.

You can hear an officer say, “Stay awake sweetheart, Stay awake.
She's got dried blood around her mouth."

OMG. And then the guy sends mom a video message saying he loves them ' and doesn't know what happened.' ya RIGHT. I sure hope she isn't listening to him. Too many times these moms forgive the guys and take them back, putting their kids at risk again. I really hope he gets locked up for a long time. :furious:

I will never understand how some women can continue to love a man who lays his hands on her children.

OMG, that video.

I'm praying for you darling.

It sounds like this mother wasn't in denial... she saw her injured child and immediately accepted what had happened.
Then also told that to the 911 dispatcher and officers as well.
Though I wish it had not taken 6 hours... I guess there is something to be said for supporting the child and not the man.
We don't see that all the time around here.

September 2014:

Huggins represents Diego Gonzales, who was indicted in March 2012 on three counts of child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, kidnapping and aggravated assault on a family member and assault and battery of a police officer.

In non-legal terms, he was accused of abusing his girlfriend’s 2½-year-old daughter and then holding his girlfriend at knife point, refusing to allow her to leave their apartment. That preceded his encounter with officers called to the scene...

Huggins said he needed more time so Gonzales could be examined by a sleep specialist to bolster a defense theory that Gonzales may have committed some of the crimes because of a sleep disorder...

District Judge Judith Nakamura was having none of it.
