WASHINGTON (AP) — The largest solar flare in five years is racing toward Earth, threatening to unleash a torrent of charged particles that could disrupt power grids, GPS and airplane flights.

The sun erupted Tuesday evening, and the effects should start smacking Earth around 7 a.m. EST Thursday, according to forecasters at the federal government's Space Weather Prediction Center. They say the flare is growing as it speeds outward from the sun.

"It's hitting us right in the nose," said Joe Kunches, a scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He called it the sun's version of "Super Tuesday."

The solar storm is likely to last through Friday morning, but the region that erupted can still send more blasts our way, Kunches said. He said another set of active sunspots is ready to aim at Earth right after this.

But for now, scientists are waiting to see what happens Thursday when the charged particles hit Earth at 4 million mph.

Why do I read this stuff when there is lots to worry about, but absolutely nothing I can do about it?

I'm interested in seeing how the day goes :)

I think this is totally cool...it will be interesting to see how things are affected (or, "if" they're affected) today and tomorrow...

This is a huge, huge flare, and it's quite clear we're in the way. Some of the 'gloom and doom' websites are in an uproar about this, and some folks are panicking. Frankly, I don't really see anything to panic about...but apparently, some folks are. Sigh. Bless their hearts.

Think I'm going to sit outside and recharge my batteries, normally reserved for going to best buy.

I'll be working ... and waiting ... (cue Twilight Zone music).

:D

Good chance you will be able to see northern lights in most of the US in a few minutes. Worth checking out if you are awake.
Last time we had a 7 they saw them in ALabama
in 38 minutes, the Geomagnetic Activity level (Kp number) will be 7.67 -- at 'STORM' LEVEL! (It's On!!)

I'm thinking of selling "I survived the Solar Flare" tshirts. Do you think anyone will buy them? :phone:

Did anyone see anything? (I was in dreamland)

A backhand slap from end of solar storm

WASHINGTON (AP) — Space weather forecasters say the solar storm that seemed to be more fizzle than fury got much stronger overnight. It's now the most potent solar storm since 2004.

And more is coming. The federal government's Space Weather Prediction Center says the same area of the sun erupted again Thursday night, with a milder storm expected in the early hours of Sunday morning........

Link has a great pic of an aurora borealis over Russia...

Anyone experience effects from this yet? We are RVing and we and the neighbors have had periodic satellite tv outages all day (socked in with a flu bug, tv and WS have been my life lately).

One of my hobbies is shortwave radio listening. The past 24 hours, reception has been very difficult, it's as if no one is on the air all across the dial. Have been doing this since the 1950's and never noted anything remotely like this before, a little scary.

I've had some difficulty with dropped calls and reception in my cell. Other than that, nothing.

Yes, a Carrington Event would be devastating at this point in history...
