Israel Keyes took part in Brista abduction, authorities believe
Israel Keyes is believed to be involved in the abduction of Samantha Koenig, said Anchorage Police Department (APD) Chief Mark Mew.

Police chief: Keyes involved in Samantha Koenig kidnapping
The arraignment of Israel Keyes, who police say has ties to the Feb. 1 abduction of barista Samantha Koenig, went quietly Tuesday at a U.S. District courthouse in downtown Anchorage.
Clad in a yellow jumpsuit, Keyes pleaded not guilty to a single charge of access device fraud. The lone federal charge, which could net him a 15-year prison sentence, is the only crime with which Keyes thus far stands accused. And although Keyes has not been charged with any crimes directly related to Koenig's abduction, investigators reiterated Tuesday that they believe he had something to do with the 18-year-old's disappearance from a Midtown coffee stand. But citing a need to protect the ongoing investigation, they continue to refuse to offer more details about Keyes's involvement.

"Obviously we're processing the shed with APD. This is obviously tied to the abduction of Samantha Koenig," Gonzalez said. "This is a joint investigation. We're working very closely with each other."

Body of missing Alaska barista believed found
The body of a missing 18-year-old barista was found in a lake Monday, almost two months to the day she was last seen on a surveillance camera video being led away from the coffee shack where she worked, Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew said.

A body believed to be that of Samantha Koenig of Anchorage was recovered by a forensic dive team from Matanuska Lake north of the city, Mew said at a Monday evening news conference. City police, state troopers and FBI agents spent hours at the lake scene earlier in the day.

Community mourns loss of Samantha Koenig
When the public learned that Anchorage police investigators found what they believe is the body of 18 year-old Samantha Koenig on Monday, many in the community -- as well as across the state and the country -- were shocked by the news.
The two-month search for Koenig began after APD says she was abducted Feb. 1 from her workplace at Midtown coffee stand Common Grounds Espresso. On Tuesday, Koenig family spokesperson Michelle Tasker thanked law enforcement and the public for its support.
"The family would just really like to show their deepest gratitude to the FBI and APD, the other law enforcement involved for all their dedication and hard work, and of course the public for all their love and support in embracing Samantha and the family," Tasker said.

Courtroom erupts as defendant tries to flee Alaska barista trial
A hearing in the case of Israel Keyes, accused of kidnapping and murdering Anchorage barista Samantha Koenig, strayed far from routine Wednesday as Keyes attempted to break for the door before being subdued by a half dozen U.S. marshals and courtroom bailiffs. A taser was deployed.

The hearing, a discussion about whether or not to declare the case complex and to set a timeline for trial, had been proceeding routinely. Keyes sat mostly motionless as Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Russo discussed the possibility of the government seeking the death penalty.
