Internet rumors and speculation cast pall on Koenig acquaintance
Updated with response from James Koenig, Samantha's father.
After 18-year-old Samantha Koenig was kidnapped from her work at Common Grounds Espresso coffee stand on the night of February 1, the internet came alive with speculation about her disappearance. Police said an armed man took her, and anonymous comments left on published news reports and rumors passed along via Facebook and Twitter began pointing at Bird.

Police said they had investigated Bird as part of initial investigations but he had never been named as a suspect in the case.

“All you have to do is identify the wrong person and all of a sudden they’re public enemy number one,” said APD spokesman Lieutenant Dave Parker.

UPDATE: Samantha Koenig's father, James Koenig, sent in the following response to this story. The words are his and not reporting or commentary by KTVA.

"They would have friends over, but it never got noisy."
On a quiet dead end street in Anchorage's South Addition neighborhood a woman methodically shovels and sweeps the few inches from her walk that came down in Wednesday's snow. The Anchorage Police Department says detectives are investigating human remains found Tuesday near Eklutna Lake, but have not said whether the case is related to the Feb. 1 abduction of barista Samantha Koenig.
APD spokeswoman Marlene Lammers told Channel 2 she spoke with Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz, head of the department's homicide unit, who confirmed that human remains have been found in the woods a few miles up the road leading to the lake, and a death investigation is in progress.

APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker said Wednesday that state medical examiners had determined the gender but not the identity of the remains, with confirmation that they were those of an adult coming Wednesday afternoon. An autopsy is expected to take several days, with an identification of the body expected no sooner than Thursday.

Samantha Koenig could be anywhere; suspect traveled inconspicuously
The Samantha Koenig case has taken another crazy turn and it involves the arrest of Israel "Izzy" Keyes, a man who was apprehended all the way in Lufkin, Texas -- which is over 4,000 miles away from Anchorage, Alaska. In fact, officials in Anchorage have acknowledged that Israel is their one and only suspect as well as their only person of interest in the abduction of the 18-year old barista. So this leaves a lot to talk about considering the investigators are not really answering questions and the young woman is still missing.

A newly-released court document sheds some light on charges against Israel Keyes -- the man who Anchorage police believe may have ties to the Feb. 1 abduction of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig -- and alleges that he may have withdrawn thousands of dollars from a bank account that wasn't his. Keyes was arrested last week in Lufkin, Tex., and police say a stolen debit card found in Keyes's possession was used to make withdrawals in Alaska, Arizona and New Mexico before the arrest.

Police chief: Keyes involved in Samantha Koenig kidnapping
The arraignment of Israel Keyes, who police say has ties to the Feb. 1 abduction of barista Samantha Koenig, went quietly Tuesday at a U.S. District courthouse in downtown Anchorage.
Clad in a yellow jumpsuit, Keyes pleaded not guilty to a single charge of access device fraud. The lone federal charge, which could net him a 15-year prison sentence, is the only crime with which Keyes thus far stands accused. And although Keyes has not been charged with any crimes directly related to Koenig's abduction, investigators reiterated Tuesday that they believe he had something to do with the 18-year-old's disappearance from a Midtown coffee stand. But citing a need to protect the ongoing investigation, they continue to refuse to offer more details about Keyes's involvement.
