Teen boy's body found buried in Fresno backyard

Authorities will try to determine if a body uncovered in a Fresno backyard is that of a teenage boy who went missing four years ago.

[snip]

Police did not identify the missing boy. But Randy Essman told the newspaper his nephew, 16-year-old Steven Humphrey, was last seen on Jan. 26, 2009 and lived in the neighborhood when he went missing. Essman said relatives believe the body uncovered Tuesday afternoon is Steven's.

Just a block down the street stands another tribute, but Humphrey's family never visits. The second memorial to Steven Humphrey is in front of the very house where Steven's family fears his killer will be living in just three months.

It sits in front of the yard where police found Humphrey's remains last year, the home where Ricardo Rosas lived. Court documents detail statements from a few witnesses who say Rosas killed Humphrey. One of them even helped dig the grave.

Rosas has never been charged with the crime, but he has been in prison for much of the last five years -- first for domestic violence against Humphrey's sister, then for throwing Molotov cocktails at the family's home, and now for domestic violence against a different woman. His latest term runs out in January and Humphrey's family says he's already sent threats their way.

The man police believe murdered a Fresno teen six years ago is free. And the victim's family says they are fed up, frustrated and grieving for many reasons...

Humphrey's mother died Wednesday from complications of a traffic accident on Monday. It is the same day Ricardo Rosas walked out of prison after serving time for other felonies...

Mark Salazar with the Fresno Police Department said, "We're at this point now where it's still an open case. We reassigned it to a new investigator. We haven't forgotten it. But it has been challenging because of different things, the evidence."
