5/2/92: Quiana Dees

On May 2, 1992, at approximately 2:44 a.m., the Neptune Township Police responded to the report of a person lying in the woods in the area of Washington Avenue and Fisher Place, Neptune, NJ. Upon arrival the police found the victim, Quiana Dees, age 12, black female, lying in the wood suffering from what appeared to be a head wound.

EVERY year on the same day, the first Saturday in May, Penny Dees takes a two-mile walk through the neighborhood where she has spent most of her 50 years, but where her daughter, Quiana, lived for just 12. She never walks alone.

Ms. Dees was awakened again after 4 a.m. by two police officers. “They asked me where my daughter was and I said, ‘She’s upstairs in her room,’ ” she said, but then they showed her a photo of the girl who had been found in a patch of woods beside the church, a few blocks from the party where she had last been seen. “I could see blood running down the side of her head, and that was not a good sight at all.” Quiana died the next day.

Quiana was murdered 20 years ago today; her killer has never been found, her family does not have justice. She snuck out of the house to go to a party; her lifeless body was found in a vacant lot near her house the next morning. She was 12 years old.

200 kids at this party and NOT ONE knows anything? Some friends!

Praying for justice

It has been thought that Quiana was the victim of an initiation into a gang. No one has spoken out. I admire the fact that her mother keeps Quiana's story in the media; I feel so badly for her.

20 years later, no one is speaking up about who murdered Quiana. Someone knows something....Quiana was 12 years old.

ASBURY PARK — After 20 years, there are still no answers to the question of who killed 12-year-old Quiana Dees.

The murder happened at Washington Avenue and Fischer Street in Neptune at the Asbury border, where her lifeless body was discovered in a vacant lot during the early morning hours of May 1, 1992

More than 100 people gathered for this year’s walk to remember Quiana. With a police escort, the Dees family — joined by people from the community’s neighborhoods, churches and schools — walked more than a mile through the streets of Asbury Park, starting at the intermediate school on Bangs Avenue and ending at the community center on Dewitt Street.

James Dees, 57, and other walkers wore t-shirts that paid tribute to Quiana and called for people to “Stop the violence. Don’t kill. Forgive.”

Quiana would be 34 this year but she never made it past 12. She went to a party with some 'friends' and the next time she was seen she, '...was found bleeding on a Neptune Township street corner...'. Again, this year, her mother and father marched in honor of Quiana. The children of her childhood peers now march with them. The community has not forgotten her.

According to the article, the killer will face 4 years in jail. I understand that she committed the crime as a minor and if she where caught as a minor then so be it. But as an adult she has had many years to come forward and own up to her crime.( those same years this girls mother has had to live with not knowing who murdered her daughter, or why) Once she turned 18 and had not admitted to her crime that should automatically kick in a mandate that she be tried as an adult. Even give a three year grace period to admit to crimes committed as a juvenile and make it 21 years old. She has been walking around free for 27 years and now will serve 4 years for murder.

Quiana Dees killing: Was it jealousy? And why won't people help police?

Dec. 21, 2018

"NEPTUNE - Jealousy remains a possible motive in the killing of 12-year-old Quiana Dees in May of 1992, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni confirmed.

Authorities believed then, and believe now, that the killer may have been jealous, but never said of whom or what. Gramiccioni said it remains a possible motive, "among others that are being explored." He declined to expand on the other possibilities....

Now, nearly 27 years later, 40-year-old Kishia Jones, most recently of North Carolina, is facing a charge of aggravated manslaughter in the killing. Since Jones was only 13 at the time authorities believe she killed Dees, she must be tried as a juvenile, and faces a maximum sentence of four years.

Although now someone as young as 15 can be waived up to adult court, at the time of the killing the threshold was 14, Gramiccioni told the Asbury Park Press. In other words, there is no way to try Jones as an adult.

What took so long?...

What about the gun?..."

"FREEHOLD - Kishia Jones has come home to answer charges that she shot and killed 12-year-old Quiana Dees in Neptune in 1992. Jones was just 13 at the time.

Jones, now 40, is listed as an inmate at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, according to inmate records maintained by the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office. Jones had been living in Henderson, North Carolina, until her arrest and extradition.

She has been back in New Jersey since at least Monday, when she was booked into the county jail, according to the sheriff's office's records. She was arrested in North Carolina in December.....

She will also be subject to no more than four years in jail, despite facing a homicide charge. She will not, however, be eligible for juvenile detention....

Quiana Dees' mother, Penny Dees, has led a march every year since Quiana's death, to help keep the crime in the limelight. You can watch a full interview with her at the top of this article...."
