MD - Mom allegedly locked children inside storage unit (interesting read)
Some Maryland churches are helping a woman who's accused of leaving her children in a padlocked storage shed.
The Ministers Alliance of Charles County raised money to help Felicia Dorsey, 33, post her $50,000 bond over the weekend and move into a hotel.
Police said Dorsey likely moved her family into the storage unit after the family was evicted from their home. Officers found two girls, ages 4 and 5, locked in the shed without food or water. Authorities said the children were OK, but hungry.
Two other children were at school at the time. All have now been placed in foster care.
Dorsey and her children spent at least a week sleeping inside a storage unit, apparently after the working mother couldn't find space at the county's only homeless shelter, according to Sandy Washington of the Ministers Alliance. Washington said Dorsey told her that she felt she had no option but to rent the $65-a-month storage unit after she and her children were evicted Nov. 11 from their apartment.
Dorsey was arrested Friday at her workplace on two charges of reckless endangerment and two counts of leaving a child unattended after the girls were discovered inside the locked unit.
The religious organization posted Dorsey's $50,000 bond Saturday and took her to a motel.Washington added that at least six other Charles County families moved to storage sheds last winter when they had no other options.Dorsey will be in court in Charles County, Md., Monday facing two counts of reckless endangerment as well as two counts of leaving a child unattended, Charles County police said.
"The world looked at this and said, 'How could this person do this?' We looked at it and said, 'She tried to survive, tried to do something for her children.' She wasn't found in a bar. She wasn't out in the street. She was out working. She was out trying to make a living. And she found shelter the best way she could. We can't condemn her for that. We have to help her," Washington said.

New Details Emerge From Kids Left In Shed Case
Girls May Not Be Woman's Daughters; Mother Spent Night Elsewhere
November 23, 2004
LA PLATA, Md. -- A woman told Charles County sheriff's investigators that after she locked her 4- and 5-year-old daughters in a storage unit, she left them in the cramped, unheated space for three nights while she spent at least one night at her mother's home.
Felicia Dorsey, 33, told investigators that she locked the two girls in the shed at 3 p.m. Nov. 16, according to an affidavit released by county District Court authorities. It states that the children, before they were found Friday, spent many hours alone in the shed, including one stretch of 22 hours.
Dorsey described the girls as her biological daughters. But Norris West, a spokesman for the state Department of Human Resources, said Monday that social services officials suspect she is not their mother. He declined to elaborate, but asked that anyone with information about the relationship between Dorsey and the girls to call county social services department. --->>
