Thanks for posting Carl. I am about to become unemployed for the first time in 30 years and plan to spend some time looking into some of the Unidentified cases. Please let me know if you have any leads you want followed up on. I am starting to build a list of possible matches for this one.
My first hunch is: Israel Ray Smith, Wythe County, Virginia, 28 to 29 year old white male missing since March 24, 2008. https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/2828/0/
and here, the VA state missing persons site, they actually spell his name wrong: https://docs.google.com/document/pub...KWB8bJnFy2SJug
While I don't know anything about Israel's history, I am somewhat familiar with that area of Virginia and his home is a direct route to where the UID was found and not all that far away (about a 40 minute drive).
While my search has just begun, some of the others from VA are too far away or circumstances do not make them a close match. Since the UID was found close to the North Carolina border I will also look there. In addition, the area is scenic, a place where hikers and backpackers might be passing through, so that needs to be taken into consideration. Please be aware that what I type is my opinion.

Possible Surry link to human remains probed
by Tom Joyce
DOBSON — Surry County authorities have identified two men missing locally as a possible link to Sunday’s discovery of human remains in Cana, Va., according to Sheriff Graham Atkinson.
One is Joseph Pike, a disabled resident of McBride Road in the Flat Rock community reported missing in July 2009.
Another possibility mentioned by Atkinson is James Roger “Jimmy” Huff, who has been missing since April 2007. Huff, of 190 Palmer Road, Mount Airy, was 55 at the time of his disappearance.
