Jury selection for the suspected triggerman in the Hustle Mart murders is starting its fourth week...

So far, 9 jurors have been selected. At least four more are needed...

“In a typical trial, by now, the trial would have been over,” explained Tyrell Clemons, attorney. “Because of the magnitude of this case, with the capital aspect of it and they are charged with murder. It makes this case a very difficult case to put the jury with.”

Yesterday, the state and the defense presented closing arguments in the sentencing phase of the Hustle Mart murder trial.

The defense is asking the jury to spare Anthony’s life, claiming he deals with mental issues. The state is arguing Anthony knows what he is doing and should be sentenced to death.

Last week, the jury convicted Anthony for killing the three family members and store employees.

Convicted triple murderer Antwan Anthony, who was sentenced to death in April, will be back in the Pitt County Courthouse this morning asking for a retrial or a new sentencing hearing because the jury may have heard someone talking about the case outside of the courtroom.

Jury selection to begin for alleged Hustle Mart triple murder ringleader

    http://wnct.com/2016/09/12/jury-sele...urder-suspect/

The trial of the second of four murder suspects in the 2012 Hustle Mart case will begin Monday in Pitt County.

Willie Whitehead is the alleged ringleader in the convenience store triple murder.

    Jury selection begins Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the other two Hustle Mart suspects Xavier Shamble and Raekwon Blount are expected back in court in February 2017.

Judge says Antwan Anthony's death sentence will stand - August

A judge this morning has denied a move by Antwan Anthony's attorneys to toss out his death sentence for killing three people in Pitt County.

Judge Robert Hobgood said statements made by Wallace did not prejudice the jury, but said Wallace should have understood what a "no contact" order for jurors meant.

The judge ordered Anthony back to death row at Central Prison in Raleigh.

Willie Whitehead gets life without parole for Hustle Mart murders

    http://www.witn.com/content/news/Jur...393079921.html

Willie Whitehead, Jr. will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being convicted today for the three murders at the Hustle Mart.

The jury took just over two hours to reach that verdict today. They found him guilty of three counts of first degree murder and three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors said that Whitehead was the mastermind in the killing of the three convenience store employees on the night of April 1, 2012.

The 28-year-old was given three mandatory life without parole sentences, and another 9-1/2 to 12-1/2 years for the armed robbery convictions.

Whitehead's father, Willie Whitehead, Sr., said it was hard to understand how his son could be convicted in the murders when he was in the vehicle at the time of the shootings.

Whitehead's co-defendant, Antwan Andre Anthony, 33, was found guilty earlier this year of shooting and killing each of the clerks. Security cameras inside the store showed that Anthony shot each man in the head during the robbery. A judge sentenced Anthony to death.

Whitehead's co-defendants, Raekwon Blount, who was 14 at the time of the murders, and Xavier Shamble, who was 19, testified against both Anthony and Whitehead during their trials. They, too, are charged with the robbery and murders, and their cases are expected to be resolved in the near future.

Raekwon Blount takes plea deal for role in Hustle Mart triple murder

    http://wnct.com/2016/11/02/raekwon-b...triple-murder/

Raekwon Blount, one of the suspects in the Hustle Mart triple murder, has accepted a plea deal for his role in the incident.

Blount pleaded guilty to three counts of 2nd-degree murder and one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Blount was sentenced to a minimum of 115 months and a maximum of 150 months with credit for time served. He was also ordered to pay attorney fees in civil judgment.

Judge J. Carlton Cole, who presided, asked Blount what he would suggest his punishment be if their roles were reversed.

Blount said he’d advise the judgment be only for the part he played. Blount said the judgment should be “hard, but fair’ and he was “trying to get another chance.”

Xavier Montel Shamble, 24, pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder and one count of armed robbery during a hearing at the Pitt County Detention Center in front of Superior Court Judge J. Carlton Cole.

Cole sentenced him to a minimum of 13 years and nine months in prison to a maximum of 17 years and six months in prison. He was given credit for four and a half years he’s spent in custody after he turned himself in to authorities a few days after the murders.
Cole stared at Shamble, who was standing at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit with his hands behind his back.

“I don’t understand how someone could be a part of taking another person’s life,” he said. “I don’t understand that at all.

“But with that being said, you can’t change that situation, and you must do the best that you can do,” Cole said. “Let this be the first day of a brand new life as you start down this new road.”

Cole said he was “pissed off” when he took Blount’s plea earlier this week because Blount did not apologize to the victims’ families when given a chance to speak.

Cole said he was satisfied that Shamble was remorseful.

“But for your attorney and the state, if it were left to my discretion, I would give you the maximum penalty,” Cole said. “I respect their decision to handle this case this way.”

Blount, who pleaded guilty to the same charges on Wednesday, was sentenced to nine and a half years to 12 and a half years in prison with credit for time served.
