Jury selection resumed Wednesday in the trial of Cid Torrez, who is accused of killing his estranged wife in Broward County.

Opening statements conclude in Cid Torrez murder trial

Prosecutors painted Torrez as an estranged husband who was obsessed with his wife's every movement before he killed her.

"He did not want anybody else to be with Vilet," Assistant State Attorney Lanie Bandell said.

Although Vilet Torrez's body has never been found, prosecutors are relying on the evidence from the police dogs and testimony from friends and coworkers who portrayed Cid Torrez as a jealous soon-to-be ex-husband.

Torrez, 43, was also convicted of multiple offenses related to his planting of tracking software on the cell phone belonging to his wife, Vilet Torrez, in the months before she disappeared.

The victim’s body was never found.

Cid Torrez faces a maximum sentence of life in prison when he’s sentenced September 1.

The sentencing of a Miramar man convicted in July of killing his estranged wife and dumping her body in the Everglades in 2012 was delayed Thursday after he stunned a courtroom by addressing cryptic comments to the President of the United States.

The sentencing was rescheduled for October 23.
The only one of his children who was in court, 18-year-old daughter Vilet Torrez, had earlier given a blistering statement of her own, saying her father was a liar who made her sick.

“Guess what, Dad. Yeah, I get your letters,” she said. “You want to know why I don’t reply? Because I don’t want to talk to you… I’m agnostic, but I can tell you now, you are going to go to hell. Thanks for everything dad. You wanted a letter from me. I’m sorry, but this is as good as you’re gonna get.”
