It might be because the odds are calculated on the assumption that all numbers are equally likely but many people pick birthdays so if they draw bigger numbers there are fewer tickets with the right combination.
says the odds of being struck by a lightning in an average lifespan of 80 years are 1/10.000 *runs for cover*

I just don't get the stories of people who win a million or more TWICE. Or more.
