WVC Council and WVCPD meets behind closed doors in anticipation of lawsuit

West Valley City Amid growing criticism of the police investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell, city council members on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with Chief Thayle "Buzz" Nielsen to discuss the case.
The council members voted at a study meeting to go into executive session to discuss "pending or reasonably imminent litigation."

....and in a related story, there will be a new chief of police in WVCPD. *sarcasm*

    We can hope, right.

    No Sunshine laws in Utah?

Washington Senator Pam Roach is seeking to change laws in Washington to prevent parents who are being investigated for murder do not have visitation rights to their children

It appears that every LE dept that had anything to do with this case, except Utah is trying to rectify problems in the system. Utah just appears to be in the CYA mode all along. Clearly they never put the "best interest of the children" as a first and foremost issue. There are laws in place to protect children and share info with CPS - even in other states when kids are at risk.

They should. This case was mucked up from the get-go.

I'm sensing a lot of Utah's reactions/inactions are political. Both Big P and Little P. I suspect WVCPD is the scapegoat here. The WA sheriff said as much in his interview - good detective work - it just didn't go anywhere.

Why? And who, really, squelched it from going further? Now we're getting into some corruption issues...

    IMO

WVCPD is no longer speaking on the case? What a laugh.. it is obvious they have kept their mouths shut far too long already.. What's new? Had they spoken up and shared info long ago we may still have Charlie and Braden with us. What a crock of nonsense. CYA after the fact. We can praise all day about the evidence they collected but they did nothing with it, ending in the brutal murder of two innocent, vulnerable children.
Shame on you and your ineffective protocols... wake up!

Perry, who was dubbed the "Velvet Hammer" by tweeters,
went on to say that he believed there was sufficient evidence to sustain a
    first-degree murder conviction
    .

"Justice has been served in the sense that the jury has spoken but justice will
finally be served one day by the Judge of
judges," Perry said during the morning show.
"And she's going to live, deal with this for
    the rest of her life."

    RIP Caylee Marie

Former US Attorney for Utah says there was enough to press charges for obstruction without a double jeapordy issue for bringing charges against Josh later.

Are the PD &/or Atty's "that gambled with two little people's lives on trying to make a pretty package for their court case" - elected officials? Does Utah really want these people making decisions for their citizens under the guise of "to Serve and Protect"? Sick and Wrong - that is my opinion and I am sticking to it. I personally feel they (Utah LE & Attys) sacrificed these children so they could have a perfect case instead of allowing a Grand Jury to make that decision. Is there some sort of OMBUDSMAN for the Utah LE an State's Atty's office reviewing this case and all of the places it went wrong? If not. . . it is HIGH Time someone had to answer to higher ups and the changes that need to be made.

West Valley denies Tribune records request in Powell case

The West Valley City Council on Wednesday denied a Salt Lake Tribune records request to release documents related to the investigation of Josh Powell, a person of interest in the case of his wife, Susan Cox Powell, who disappeared Dec. 6, 2009.

"The council decided to uphold the city manager’s decision not to release the records," Councilman Corey Rushton confirmed Wednesday.

The council held a Tuesday night discussion on whether or not to release the records, he said. The council unanimously agreed on their decision to deny the request, Rushton said.

They agreed unanimously? No arm twisting indicated? I'm wondering if there might be something they can still use in the ongoing case against SP.
