Emergency crews suffered multiple bee stings when they were attacked by a swarm of bees at the scene of a fatal honey truck accident on the Golden Highway near Dubbo. A 66-year-old Dubbo man died when his truck, laden with beehives and wax, crashed into the back of a semi-trailer near Dubbo at 7pm (AEDT) yesterday, a NSW police spokesman said.

The driver of the semi trailer loader, a 39-year-old Singleton man, escaped injury.

But police and emergency service workers suffered multiple bee stings from a large swarm of bees which escaped from the damaged hives.

Local beekeepers were brought in to remove the beehives and bees which blocked the highway for more than three hours.

The roadway remained extremely slippery from spilt honey and wax.

Police inquiries were continuing.
