GUILTY IN - Stephanie Kirk, 35, New Albany, 25 March 2012

Stephanie Marie Kirk, 35, was last seen leaving a friend’s home in the 1300 block of East Spring Street in New Albany around 1 p.m. March 25 to meet an acquaintance at the Uptown Bar, police said.

Investigators said Kirk, who was living with her father and teenage daughter in the Charlestown area, was intending to meet a man known as Jeff Cohan, whom she met for the first time the previous night at the Uptown Bar, 330 Vincennes St. in New Albany. Police described the man as white and between 55 and 60 years old and are uncertain about the spelling of his name.

Police have been unable to locate the man, who they believe had arranged to meet Kirk at the bar and go to Shelbyville, Ky., to pick up a motorcycle and go on a ride with him. He is not considered a suspect, said Maj. Donnie Bowyer, the sheriff’s office’s chief of detectives.

Bowyer said there are conflicting accounts about whether Kirk arrived at the bar. Surveillance video from the bar “doesn’t last as long as we need it to last,” he said.

Bowyer said Kirk has not used her cell phone or debit card since March 25. Police do not suspect foul play, he said.

Kirk’s father, Tony Kirk, said at a Jeffersonville news conference that his daughter is on high-blood pressure medication and can become disoriented and light-headed if she is not taking it. Tony Kirk said he last spoke with his daughter the day she disappeared, and she hasn’t been in contact with anyone in the family since.

Police said initially said the man’s name was Jeff Cohan, but later received a tip that his name was Jeff Gohan, but investigators can't even confirm that's the man's actual name.

Deputies said they have searched motorcycle shops and have not been able to track leads. They also cannot find Gohan.

"He is not a suspect," said Major Donnie Bowyer, "We've been given info that he may have been the last person to see her, and maybe has some information for us"

Just days after charging William Clyde Gibson with murdering two women in separate incidents, police on Thursday searched for a missing woman in the Ohio River near New Albany, Ind., saying they were acting on a lead developed in the Gibson investigation.

Stephanie Marie Kirk, 35, of Charlestown, Ind., was last seen about 1 p.m. March 25 as she left a friend’s home in the 1300 block of East Spring Street in New Albany.

“We’re searching for her and there is that possibility that that is where she is,” said Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden — though a detective said later that investigators are also following up on reports that Kirk had been spotted in Jeffersonville and elsewhere since her disappearance.

New Albany police Maj. Keith Whitlow would not confirm what searchers were looking for near the riverfront, but he said police are following up on information developed in the Gibson investigation.

Gibson who entered the courtroom Wednesday now has a thick beard.

He's also been forced to grow his hair out, instead of keeping his head shaved, in order to hide a tattoo he acquired in prison that said "Death Row X 3."

It's a second death sentence for William Clyde Gibson.

The confessed serial killer swiveled in his chair Friday morning as a Floyd County judge read his fate. "The sentence of death is the only appropriate sentence," the judge said.

"I've been waiting to hear that for two years," Tony Kirk, Stephanie Kirk's father said.
