NPS moves closer to first tribal national park

I hope that part of the turn-over to the tribe is that the land is cleared of all undetonated munitions.

The Badlands is a beautiful place; it is good to see it returned to the Oglala Lakota tribe, which is part of the Oceti Sakowin.

The land was taken from the tribe by the federal government in the 1940s for a practice bombing range and is now managed by the park service as part of the Badlands park.

The South Unit of Badlands National Park is entirely within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota.

It's nice to see good news!

The Badlands are such a spectacular site. Being there even managed to move my very laid back, blasé-about-everything 15 year old son! .

So offensive that it was turned into a practice bombing range. I can't even imagine it being used as such, having been there. I never knew that it was used that way, and am hoping with you that they clear it of any remnants of the bombs. Ideally the government should be required to do that before the turn over - clean up your own mess, dont leave it for others to take care of! Even my kids know that.
