'Hero' whose stepdaughter was burned in fire is jailed - after he admits
he actually raped her, sprayed her with lighter fluid and set her alight

A man who claimed to be a hero after his 10-year-old stepdaughter was badly burned in an apparent house fire has been jailed - after he admitted spraying the girl with lighter fluid after raping her.

Chris Newberry, 31, had raped the girl before spraying her with the fluid and setting her on fire. She survived but suffered 60 per cent burns on her body.

Police initially believed the the fire in 2009 was accidental with Newberry posing as a hero who saved the girl and other young family members including his biological daughter, 4, from the blaze.
---
However, after further police investigations the awful truth of how the fire broke out was revealed. Newberry pleaded guilty to raping the girl and starting the fire.

On March 14 2009 Newberry carried his 4-year-old biological daughter out of the bedroom she shared with the victim in their mobile home in Wichita, prosecutors said.

He then raped his step-daughter, poured lighter fluid over her body and set her on fire. The girl survived the blaze but suffered burns on 60 per cent of her body.
---
On Thursday Newberry was sentenced to life in prison plus 165 months for arson charges.

What a !!!!!!! They should burn him alive!

What an SOB. It is bad that he raped her. But she would have survived, would have learned to go on. Maybe she would have told, maybe she wouldn't have. But the worst that would have happened to him would have been a few (too few) years of prison. But his answer to that is to spray lighter fluid on her?

He not only killed her, he endangered his own child and others in the home. He exposed his child to the rape of the other girl. She will grow up knowing what her father did, and even though it is not her fault, she will always have that on her.

He didn't kill her. She's still alive. She had burns over 60% of her body and is still recovering, though going to school and attempting to live a normal if painful - both physically and psychologically - existence. He was proclaimed a hero for "saving" her.

What an unbelievably horrifying case. That's all I will say for now, otherwise I might say things that aren't appropriate for a public message board! :maddening:
