A story in today's Deseret News.

I think that, in steve powell's case, the *advertiser censored* was an indicator of deep seated problems; the *advertiser censored* didn't make him who he was, it was just an indicator. He is a sick man, he needs to tell what he knows about Susan's whereabouts.

Steven Powell, born in Portland, Ore., at one time was described by his wife as a loving husband and devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served an LDS mission to Argentina. He married Terrica Martin in the early 1970s and had five children: Jennifer, John, Josh, Michael and Alina.

At times they struggled financially, but Steven was able to maintain a steady job with a California-based furniture company as a delivery driver. But over the course of four decades, there was change.

Excerpt from story....secrets can kill, in this case they did. :(

Graves recalled a business trip where Josh and another boy were swimming in a hotel pool, and a short time later she found them around a corner with a 4-year-old girl who was no longer wearing a swimsuit.

Terri said her son Josh made a comment in 1992 about a girl his brother liked: "All she is good for is her body, right Dad?"

WHY were those boys ever allowed to have contact with josh again...SUPERVISED visits should have been demanded.

When Josh and Susan Powell's children, Charlie and Braden, were subsequently removed from the Puyallup home, state officials expressed concern about a graphic poster of a woman found inside the home with a knife sticking through her.

State welfare officials noted in one report that "*advertiser censored* was laying out primarily in (Steven's) room" when investigators went through the house.

Josh Powell admitted taking photos of people's legs in public without their knowledge. And shortly before he killed his two sons and himself, shocking allegations were revealed about pornographic animated images — some depicting incest — that had been found on his laptop in West Valley City.

There were about 400 "hand drawings, computerized drawings and photographs," according to a report. Some of the images were of well-known cartoon characters, such as the Simpsons, the Flintstones and SpongeBob engaged in pornographic acts. Some of those images depicted incest.

A state-appointed evaluator said the graphic nature of the images was not only "concerning," but also suggested "global approval" of sex between a minor and an adult

With all of this information, especially Terrica's divorce papers, why were the boys allowed near steve powell? How could they be kept in the house with him? WHAT was the tipping point that removed them? This will be an interesting trial.

Jacie, thank you for posting these articles! I have family obligations and can't read them till tonight. :(

Stevens trial starts tomorrow right?

BBM. I'm trying to figure out how Steven managed not to be convicted and jailed decades ago.

You are welcome; I wish that we never had to know who josh or steve powell was.
It is scheduled to start tomorrow, unless something happpens to change that.

I believe part of the reason SP was allowed to go on for so long is due to our society's tacit approval of *advertiser censored*. Many people see it as "victimless" and even harmless. They don't see the lives that are ruined by the inappropriate sexualization of children when they are exposed to it and the objectification of women.

It is my personal opinion that *advertiser censored* never did anybody any good, and people who expose children to it should be held accountable. Anybody who has studied serial killers such as Ted Bundy knows how damaging *advertiser censored* is. It kills a part of the soul. JMO.

I couldn't agree more. Many people view one image or one video and are then shamed into agreeing that it's "just sex" and "just an outlet." With even light, regular use, however, it renders users unable to have normal sexual relationships - emphasis on relationships. In *advertiser censored*, people are objects, just stimulus for use, and of course, most *advertiser censored* isn't Playboy-like nudes in hazy lighting. *advertiser censored* seems to have an effect exactly like drugs on the central nervous system - more and worse are required in order to extract the same stimuli. That seems to bleed over into the "real" world in which users try to operate.

But I don't think that this all comes from SP's use of *advertiser censored* - or that he just discovered it. I am betting we will learn SP was himself introduced to it and to bizarre sexual activity by another family member or adult when he was younger. JMO.

I think it was his addiction to *advertiser censored* that was part of it. I also think he was never really having to answer for his various problems; divorce court isn't the place to put punitive action against a *advertiser censored* addicted spouse. The court steve is facing tomorrow IS the place where steve will be held accountable.

Laughing at 'crazy old uncles' or 'creepy granpas' doesn't fix the problem. Internalizing bad action as a 'family problem' just perpetuates the behavior. This family is a case study in generational abusive/aberrant behavior.

The Salt Lake Tribune story today:

Steve Powell a puzzle to friends, family who watched baffling changes

Throughout his life, Steven Craig Powell has played convincing roles on the stage of public opinion: the doting husband and father, the songwriter inspired by a rocky childhood, the friendly neighbor ready to lend a hand, the seasoned salesman.

Yet those who have known the 62-year-old father-in-law of missing West Valley City woman Susan Cox Powell best say they also have witnessed a darker spectrum of behavior in a snide antagonist who tells crude jokes in front of his children and relishes both *advertiser censored* and the opportunity to preach anti-Mormon sentiment.

Steven Craig Powell, 62, is charged with 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possessing an image of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

His estimated eight-day trial begins Monday in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma, Wash.

Prosecutors claim Powell took images of girls as young as 8 during a 10-year span, although the court case focuses on voyeurism episodes from 2006 and 2007. Powell allegedly filmed two neighbor girls bathing and using the toilet.

If convicted, Powell could face a maximum penalty of five years in prison on each count. If Powell is convicted on all counts, the judge could order him to serve consecutive sentences for a total of 75 years in prison.

As Steve goes on trial in Washington state Monday, it’s unclear which version of his character jurors will believe.

Please Lord, let the judge give him 75 years!!!!

I watched ID the other night and they had Susan Powells' case..

Josh was talking and asked where he thought Susan was and why...he believes she is with another man, that she is a very sexual person...his voice so soft, you could barely hear him...He reminded me of Drew Peterson with how he spoke of his wife..Josh was a piece of work, is my belief..has no respect for woman...

Too bad the authorities had to allow him visits but it should have been at the CPS office and not the home he set up to act as if he was living there. It became the boys deathtrap...I do hope JP burns in you know where..:maddening:

Just read, with mounting disbelief, the article and search warrants. They found a baggie filled with hair in S Powell's residence.

I will never understand how JP was given custody of those boys

Does anyone know if there will be live courtroom coverage of the trial and do we want a seperate thread for that?

Tacoma, Wash. —Jury selection will soon be underway in Pierce County Superior Court as a trial for the father-in-law of missing West Valley City woman Susan Powell begins Monday.

Judge Ronald E. Culpepper is presiding over the estimated eight-day trial of Steven Craig Powell on voyeurism and *advertiser censored* charges.

The parents of Susan Powell, who have maintained Powell and his son were involved in their daughter’s disappearance, will be watching.

"We don’t expect a great deal, but we want to be there," her father, Chuck Cox, told the Associated Press. "Maybe he’ll decide he has lost, and that he needs to propose a bargain to tell the detectives what he knows. Perhaps he might decide he can inflict one more insult by blurting out something that might be useful."

Jury selection is expected to take up to two days, with about four days of testimony to follow.

Steven Powell not likely to take stand in own defense
By Pat Reavy, Deseret News

TACOMA, Wash. — Steven Powell will apparently not take the witness stand in his own defense during his trial on charges of voyeurism and child *advertiser censored* next week.

Powell's defense team submitted its witness list this week to the Pierce County Superior Court in preparation for his upcoming trial on 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of materials of minors engaged in explicit conduct. The list includes just two people, Glenn Glover and Dave La Tourette, private investigators for Powell's defense team.

Steven Powell is not listed as a potential person to take the stand.
