What happened to Katie? Mystery as graphic designer, 25, is found dead in her parents' garage
Mystery surrounds the death of a promising young graphic designer, who was found dead at her parents' home in a quiet, upscale neighborhood in Malibu, California.
Katie Wilkins, 25, was on the garage floor when her brother discovered her body on Saturday after her parents left town for the weekend. Police still have no idea how she died.
Among the many bizarre circumstances of her death: her 1998 BMW Z3 convertible is missing; all of the doors to the house were locked; and the family's dog was found wandering the neighbourhood.

Malibu woman's death: foul play not suspected
The coroner's office said Monday that they do not believe foul play was involved in the death of a 25-year-old Malibu woman. However, they will need to wait for toxicology tests to determine a cause of death.

Katie Wilkins was found dead Saturday night by her older brother Steve inside the garage at a house on the 23400 block of Moon Shadows Drive. The victim's parents had left Friday on a trip out of state. Steve Wilkins said he was concerned when he hadn't heard from her.
"When I got closer and put a hand to her wrist, it was really cold, and all of a sudden, a bunch of question come through, what happened? How could she be left like? Was she alone?" Steve Wilkins said.

Who Was With Katie Wilkins at her Parents` Malibu Home the Day She Died?
How could a 25-year-old graphic designer, Katie Wilkins, die of natural causes? Katie Wilkins was found dead by her brother Saturday night, lying on the garage floor of her parents Malibu home (at 23400 Moon Shadow Drive). An autopsy doesn`t point to foul play, but toxicology testing may expose the true cause of death, which could still be homicide. The circumstances of Katie`s puzzling death indicate she had some company at the comfortable, secluded Malibu home of her parents (Rob and Diane Wilkins).

Detectives seek to question son of Pepperdine's president
Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives are seeking to question Christopher A. Benton, the son of Pepperdine University President Andrew K. Benton, in connection with the death of a Malibu woman almost two weeks ago.
The body of 25-year-old graphic designer Katie Wilkins was found in her parents' garage on West Moon Shadows Drive by her brother, Steve, the evening of April 28. Det. Tim O'Quinn of the sheriff's homicide bureau said Wilkins apparently died of a heroin overdose, although the results of toxicology tests are pending.
O'Quinn said Wednesday that the case was being considered "non-criminal" but that detectives had surveillance footage of 27-year-old Christopher Benton getting into a car with Wilkins hours before at a McDonald's restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Benton, who has checked into a rehabilitation facility, was probably the last person to see Wilkins alive, O'Quinn said.

New details in Katie Wilkins case add to growing list of questions
According to the county coroner's office, an official cause of death for Katherine Jessie Wilkins is still deferred; and family members await completion of forensic testing they hope will offer some insight into what happened before April 28 when the 25-year-old's lifeless body was discovered on the garage floor of the family home.
In an interview with the Malibu Surfside News this week, Rob and Diane Wilkins, the parents of the young woman everyone called Katie, reflected on the difficulty of coping with her death and the frustration over how long the official forensic analysis process takes. It is this process, however, that may provide the means to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Katie Wilkins' last hours.

Chris Benton, Pepperdine President's Son Tied to Malibu Heroin Death, Arrested on Campus
Sheriff's investigators told LA Weekly last month that 27-year-old Christopher Benton's family hired a fancy lawyer as soon as Wilkins was found dead. Although surveillance video shows he was hanging out with Wilkins on the night she died, the younger Benton has refused to talk. "I have my own opinions as to what he did, and none of them are very good," said Detective Tim O'Quinn. "But I can't go to a D.A. with them."

Son of Pepperdine Prexy Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Charges
At his arraignment hearing last week in Van Nuys Superior Court, Christopher Benton, 27, pleaded not guilty to five felony counts stemming from criminal threats made against his parents, Pepperdine University president Andrew Benton and his wife Deborah, and theft of a handgun from Brock House, the family residence on campus, on Aug. 22.
Benton's case is expected to return to the same courthouse on Friday, Sept. 7, for a preliminary hearing. He remains in custody at the Men's Central Jail. Bail on the felony charges is set at $195,000, with an additional $25,000 bail amount for a warrant information sheet hold based on parallel misdemeanor complaint proceedings that ultimately may or may not be conjoined with the felony case.
