Dear Lord have mercy. You're 80 years old and can still make it on a trip to Atlantic City all the way from Canada only to be stabbed to death on the street?

Victims names are not released yet naturally. However, there was a police officer right by the scene as it happened that Antoinette Pelzer decided to rob two women. The other victim is aged 47 and died in hospital later today. Witnesses said Pelzer originally tried to take their purses, and then stabbed both victims numerous times.

RIP dear Canadians I am so sorry you had to meet the worse of society when you visited here.

Authorities aren't certain how long Pelzer has been in Atlantic City, but she has a Pennsy drivers license.

Of course she does. She's from Philly. However she has lived in Las Vegas as well as somewhere in Ohio.

Stabbing innocent people including an 80 year ld for God's sake.

AC is a pit, and if we go down, we valet park and never leave the resort / casino - never. Walking one block away is entering a war zone and the boardwalk at night is zombie land.

Shame on all of the local and state officals that have continued to leave the surrounding area as slums. AC has been around for decades, and was built upon promises of local improvement and jobs - which never really happend. The whole place should just be bulldozed.

I wonder what part of Canada they're from?

she must've really been viscious or hit vital organs - the police officer was right there so there wouldn't have been any delay in getting them appropriate help and yet they both died

so sad ...

really? there's no good shopping or anything?

I wondered if the victims were out for a stroll after breakfast to do a bit of shopping ...

You can't stroll down there.

Apparently there's some outlet stores there now. They were supposedly in back of Bally's where this happened.

Mind you I haven't been down there in ages. However, the general rule always was you do not go off the Boardwalk. Ya just don't. Maybe to the Irish Pub, but that was it.

Those poor ladies probably thought they were safe.

The first casino opened in like what? 1978? Now here everyone goes up to the old racetrack. That or Sugar House which don't have a great vibe. That leaves AC to rot. You want to shop I guess you have to do it in the casino.

BBM - Good times back in the day.

How horrible!

Filly, please don't apologize just because these women were from Canada. Bad **** happens in many places, including Canada! These women could have been from elsewhere in the US and it would have been equally tragic. :(

Having said that, I remember being "scolded" on a thread here on WS when I said that we often don't lock our doors when we go out during the day. I was told in no uncertain terms that I was sooo naive and that I just encouraged others to be equally naive. Hadn't I heard of carjackings and home invasions?? Well, yes, of course I've heard of them, but honestly I hadn't heard of them in the context of where I live. I'm pretty sure that these events don't happen where I live, perhaps with the exception, rarely, of those who are directly involved in the drug business.

I wonder if these women were equally as naive as me. Where I live we don't worry when we are simply walking down the street. I presume this is the case in a number of places in the US as well.

Signed,

Very naive.

Two Canadian women staying at an Atlantic City casino were stabbed and killed Monday in what appears to be a random attack in broad daylight, Atlantic County prosecutors told NBC10.

The victim's were two women: one 47 and the other 80.

Police say the attack appeared to be random and unprovoked.

Pelzer was being held on $250,000 charged with two counts of aggravated assault, robbery and weapons charges. She has a Pennsylvania license and police were trying to figure out how long she has been staying in A.C.

They are going to add homicide charges since the victims died.

How bizarre. I wonder if she has mental issues?

And yes, scary looking indeed! What's up with the crazy hair?

Dear Very Naive,

Please know I will never chastise you for not locking your door.

Sincerely, Filly

In all seriousness maybe these women weren't naive. Broad daylight. A trauma center down the da*n block and a cop on patrol.

News has been updated and from surveilance tapes they saw Pelzer run across the street purposely to steal the one woman's purse.

WARNING anyone that is a daughter or mother this will break your heart. Pelzer attempted to steal the younger woman's purse. As she was being stabbed the 80 year old who is believed to be her mother tried to help her. Talk about heart wrenching.

Pelzer is originally from where else? Philadelphia. Her aunt said she is mentally ill. Ya think? She's been homeless in AC since January. She had listed as one of her addy's here as a mental health facility. I think out of Presby. Hey, from her photo I certainly wouldn't tangle with her. She had the whereabouts to ask where her public defender was though and furrowed her brow at the talk of the purse snatching.

No names of the poor victims although they are saying they are from the Asian community who frequent AC and/or Vegas.

so sad ...

They were from Scarborough, a suberb of Toronto.

Wow. In broad daylight!

Prayers for these womens families.

Woman laughs in court while facing charges in fatal stabbing of Canadian tourists in Atlantic City

Gladys Pelzer, the suspect’s mother, told WPVI-TV in Philadelphia that the stabbings apparently occurred while her daughter was trying to get money to buy cigarettes.

"I feel sorry about the people she hurt all because she wanted a cigarette. That’s what this was all about," she told the TV station.

Yes there are places like that in the US, I live in one such place. There is nothing wrong with having a relaxed standard of security in your own safe area.

It IS a problem when people take that relaxed attitude into more dangerous areas. Human predators can sense it, it's an instinctual thing and they can tell when potential victims are unaware and oblivious to threats, that makes the victims easier targets as they are less likely to respond in an aggressive way.

Way back in the eighties when I went to AC with my husband's company, we were told NOT to venture off the boardwalk. We walked in groups. So sad that no one warned these ladies that they might be in danger in broad daylight.

Housel, the prosecutor, voiced similar sentiments after the court hearing. In response to a question from a Canadian broadcaster, Housel said the killings could have happened anywhere.

"It could have happened in Philadelphia. It could have happened in Las Vegas," he said. "Don’t think this is something negatively special about Atlantic City that doesn’t exist anywhere else. There’s actually crime in Canada too, I hear."

wow, that strikes me as snarky, especially when even people quoted in the paper agree that AC is a high-crime area and not to venture off the boardwalk

so yes, it could've and does happen everywhere but the point might be - DOES IT HAPPEN MORE FREQUENTLY IN AC AND IS THE PLACE UNSAFE FOR TOURISTS?

because from what I've read, I have no desire to ever spend my money in Atlantic City

Pelzer will put on quite a show in court before this is over, I'm sure. Get ready for an insanity defense with all the trimmings.

Mom says it's all about her wanting a cigarette. What I want to say about that would get me banned, so I'll refrain.
