Grand Junction homeless man is behind bars after he apparently attacked another man with an ax Sunday afternoon.

Police say it happened at Whitman Park. Homeless man Mark Hirshberg, 55, allegedly attacked a 33-year-old homeless man repeatedly with the ax. The victim was transported to St. Mary's Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

Officers were able to catch up to Hirschberg after they say he fled the area on a bicycle and swam a portion of the Colorado River to a small island located just south of the Riverside area. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search for Hirschberg by providing their river boat and personnel.

Hirschberg was taken into custody and charged with one count of 1st Degree Assault and Felony Menacing each.

No additional information is available at this time.
