Mickey Shunick's Family Speaks Out About Developments in the Case

05/28/2012 11:55 PM by Jim Hummel
With big developments in the Mickey Shunick investigation over the weekend, her family is staying positive.

Whatever the scenario, the family believes Mickey is alive. They have a plea for whoever might be holding her: "Drop her off at a hospital or a safe-have or at a busy street somewhere," said Charlie. "Someone will find her and bring her back to us and that's all we care about."

Police Continue Search of Area Where Mickey Shunick's Bike was Found; Find No New Evidence

05/28/2012 06:20 PM by Elizabeth Hill
Police began their search of the Whiskey Bay Bridge area this morning, but the investigation was called off around Noon after a thorough search of the area turned up no new evidence.
Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft says in a missing persons case it is assumed there may be some foul play involved.

    1. Investigators, including the Lafayette Police Mounted Patrol Unit are searching again today for clues and evidence near the I-10 Whiskey Bay exit. Yesterday, fishermen found Mickey Shunick's bike beneath the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge at the Whiskey Bay exit 127 in Iberville Parish. The public should stay away from the area to allow investigators to their jobs.

A big development in the Mickey Shunick case with Lafayette Police confirming to KATC Sunday that they found Mickey's bicycle.

It was found 30 miles away from where Mickey was last seen, beneath the Whiskey Bay I-10 bridge, at exit 127 in Iberville Parish. Investigators spent much of the day there looking for more clues, but still no sign of Mickey.

    Exploring Whiskey Bay

    Exploring Whiskey Bay

    (excellent article.)

It's that one exit on eastbound Interstate 10 that just seems a little bit different than the others.

Travelers who take Exit 127, commonly known as the Whiskey Bay exit, are driving into the definition of seclusion. While most interstate exits lead to at least convenience stores and fast food restaurants, this one — just 30 miles east of Lafayette —is almost completely desolate.

It's also the turn-off linked to the mysterious and high-profile disappearance of Michaela "Mickey" Shunick, last seen May 19 in surveillance footage riding her bicycle. Her bike was discovered a week ago in the waters of Whiskey Bay.

This remote exit has a ramp that curves sharply, almost into a complete circle, and leads onto La. 975. Turn left onto La. 975, go just about 40 yards, and there's a huge white sign with "NO" written in large black letters. The sign is a not-so-subtle reminder that there is no public access into the woods beyond that point and trespassing is prohibited. Visitors clearly are not welcome.
