Missing woman was last seen in Independence

Monday, December 13, 2004

The search for a missing Kansas City woman has shifted to the Independence area after her car was found here over the weekend

Summer Shipp, 54, was last seen in a central Independence neighborhood Wednesday as she was conducting door-to-door market research surveys. She was reported missing Friday after her family had not heard from her and she did not come into work.

Detective George Parks of the Independence Police Department said her car, a bronze four-door BMW, was discovered on the 1500 block of West College Terrace Saturday.

"There is no evidence of foul play at this time," he said. "We have talked to people in the neighborhood who recall seeing her in the neighborhood, but we haven't found someone who knows where she went."

Search dogs from Leavenworth, Kan., were brought in to assist in the search, but no evidence of where Shipp might have gone was found.

Parks said there are few leads in the case. He said the Police Department is looking for anyone who has any information on the whereabouts of the woman.

"There are fliers all over the place," he said. "We will follow up on whatever leads come into our office."

At this time, Parks said it appears Shipp disappeared while she was working in Independence. However, it is unclear exactly when she was last seen or where the woman might have gone.

Shipp is 5 foot 1 inch and 105 pounds. She has strawberry blond hair. Her family is offering a $10,000 reward for information that could lead to finding Shipp.

If anyone has information on Shipp or her location, call 474-TIPS.

Thank you for posting this! It isn't too horribly far from where I live and I haven't seen a thing on the St Louis news yet.

My guess is she knocked on the wrong door while doing her door to door sales and somebody killed her. This is an extremely dangerous occupation these days.

Search continues

Vigil planned Summer Shipp's family will hold prayer at 5 p.m. Sunday at the site where her car was found. That's across from where police searched the home at 1515 W. College Terrace.

The search for Summer Shipp continues this weekend, with her family planning a prayer vigil for Sunday.

Police acted on a tip on Friday, bringing in search-and-rescue dogs to scour the woods east of William Chrisman High School and behind the China 1 Buffet restaurant.

Detective George Parks with the Inde pendence Police Department said someone saw Shipp in the area of U.S. 24 and Parker Street.

"This is a large and vast area," Parks said, indicating why police used the dogs to help.

Shipp, 54, of Kansas City, has been missing since Dec. 8. Independence police found her car in the 1500 block of College Terrace Saturday.

Shipp's family will hold prayer vigil at 5 p.m. Sunday at the site where her 1986 BMW was found.

The location is across from where police searched a home at 1515 W. College Terrace, where officers reportedly removed some items.

Police did not say what the items were, or if they were related to the Shipp case, only that a witness said Shipp entered the home on Dec. 8 while doing her job as a door-to-door market researcher.

Police on Dec. 11 arrested Jeff Sauerbry, an occupant of the home on College Terrace, for unrelated traffic warrants.

Parks and other detectives are searching for connections but said Sauerbry is not a suspect at this time.

"He was known to be in this area (U.S. 24 and Parker)," Parks said. "He has frequented this area in the past."

Parks said Sauerbry used to work at a used car lot just east of the China 1 Buffet.

Parks said police are looking into every lead.

Shipp family concerned

Summer Shipp's family is hopeful she will come home soon.

Brandy Shipp, 33, knew something was wrong when she saw her mother's dog hadn't been fed.

"She's a huge dog lover," Brandy ex plained.

Brandy went last Friday to her mother's Kansas City home after receiving a call that Summer had not been to work in two days. Summer works for several market-research companies.

Looking through her mom's calendar, Brandy said Summer only went door to door maybe six days a month.

The company Shipp was working for faxed Brandy a map of the area in Independence where Summer's car had been found Saturday.

"Police officers were writing a ticket for her car," Brandy said.

Although Brandy hasn't seen her mother in a week and two days, she's confident her mother will return safely.

"She's going to find a way to make it through this until we find her," Brandy said. "She knows we all want her back."

A movie lover, Summer owned the Bijou Theater in Kansas City for nearly 20 years. She also collects antiques and has a booth at the Parkville Antique Mall.

"Old-time everything," Bran dy said, adding her mother is a friendly person. "She's just a smiley, bubbly socialite."

Brandy's uncle from Chicago and aunts from Florida flew in earlier this week to help in the search.

They have established a Web site, http://www.friendsofsummer.com, containing a map of the Independence neighborhood where Summer's car was found, and pictures and a description of Summer.

"Someone's holding her against her will," Brandy said. "We gotta take action. We're not gonna let it fall to the back burner. I know my mom would not want me to sit around crying. I'm just glad there are so many people behind me right now."

Although there are four registered sex offenders living in the neighborhood where Summer's car was found, police have ruled out all four as suspects. Parks said police have finished questioning the men in the 700 block of North Forest, the 800 block of North Fuller, the 1200 block of Waldo and the 700 block of North Fuller.

Sauerbry, the man in police custody, is not on the registry. Police searched Sauerbry's home again Thursday with a warrant to search his bedroom.

Sauerbry's mother, Sherry Sauerbry, voluntarily let police search the rest of the house earlier in the week.

I agree and am afraid you're right. She looks like a very kind woman. Prayers for her and her family.

JOIN US FOR SOME
SUMMER TIME!

As you all know, our dear Summer Shipp has been missing for four weeks. It is imperative that we find her and bring her home. Her family and friends have done an excellent job of getting the word out and keeping her face before the public. All this comes at a cost, however, and it is vital that we raise additional funds to maintain the effort.

Summer is a great movie fan, so there could be no better setting for this event than the theater at Screenland. Butch and Marti Rigby have very generously committed to donating all proceeds from the evening to the effort to bring Summer home. There will be a special screening of the Academy Award nominated “The Triplets of Bellville.”

Please join us for an evening of film and fellowship on
Thursday, January 13, at 7:00 PM

Hello Friends of Summer,

Because of ongoing difficulty accessing the friends of summer email
address at netscape.net, we have set up this new email address. From
now on, please send all emails to friendsofsummer@gmail.com Keep in
mind, that the "zero" we had to use in the old address
(friends0fsummer@netscape.net) is no longer an issue. Just type
friendsofsummer@gmail.com and it will work just fine.

If you have sent an email in the last week or so to the old address,
please resend it here. We have not been able to access the old email
address for quite some time now.

Also, you may be interested in knowing that the website has been
revamped and now includes links to articles, latest news, a guestbook,
a search engine and photos from the Vigil held on 18 December 2004.

Thanks,

Brandy Shipp

Dear Friends of Summer:

There is a wooded area called Bundschu Park in Independence located at
College Avenue and Claremont Avenue near where Summer's car was found.

This Friday, January 21, we are getting together a group of people to
search the area for any clues that may relate to Summer's
disappearance.

Can you help? If so please contact me so I can add your name(s) to
our list. The weather should be in the 40's--50's.

We will meet Friday at noon in front of the park in the parking lot.

Relatives of a missing Kansas City woman said they had received anonymous letters about the disappearance and want more specific information.

Shipp's daughter, Brandy Shipp, said the letters indicated that Summer Shipp was seen in a confrontation with someone on an Independence street. The letters also gave a sketchy outline of a house and a vehicle, Brandy Shipp said.

Please don't forget to watch for Summer's story on the Montel Show tomorrow. Times and stations will vary, so check your local listings.

Also, VERY important, everyone needs to go to the Montel Show Site afterwards and enter in feedback thanking them for doing the show and letting them know how important this is!

Here's the link to do this:

http://www.montelshow.com/whats_your_POV/pov.htm

Even if you do not watch the show, do it anyway so they will continue to give oportunities for our families to get national attention for their cases, and hopefully answers.

Thank you!

A mountain of circumstantial evidence implicates a convicted felon living in the Independence neighborhood where a Kansas City woman disappeared in December. The man was also questioned about a 1998 homicide that remains unsolved.

A private investigation has brought forward the information about the disappearance of Summer Shipp, 55. olice, however, say little except that Shipp's disappearance is still under investigation. No charges have been filed, and the searched has garnered national attention through talk shows and CNN broadcasts while a daughter holds out hope she may one day see her mother again..o what happened to Summer Shipp?

They only searched for two hours? That doesn't seem to me to be a very intensive search, even if they were using cadaver dogs.
Still, I guess the fact that the suspect's mother offered to allow the search, means that she knows the body is not there and it is safe to allow a search.

Summer's story is featured today on the Project Jason-Voice for the Missing blog.

It is entitled “Stop and Smell the Roses”. It is not just the story of a missing mother, but of her daughter and the life's lessons she learned after her mother's disappearance.

Be sure to help out the families of the missing by telling others about the blog. This is just another way we can reach out and let the faces of the missing be seen. We welcome appropriate website links. Other ideas are posting the blog link on other forums you frequent, and sending it out to your friends and family via email.

Thank you for helping us to help others.
