Officials: Wiretaps, former aides led US, Mexican officials to Mexico's most-wanted drug lord

Mexican marines working with U.S. authorities chased him but lost the man known as "Shorty" in a maze of tunnels under the city, a U.S. government official and a senior law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Sunday.

It would be a short-lived escape for Guzman, who was captured early Saturday hiding out in a condominium in Mazatlan, a beach resort town on Mexico's Pacific Coast.

As allies fell to police operations, noose closed on most-wanted Mexican drug lord 'El Chapo'

A U.S. law enforcement official said Saturday that at least some were actually security for Guzman, and authorities used them to obtain information that helped lead to the head of the cartel. The official was not authorized to talk to journalists and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Heard about his capture on the radio this morning.

These larger cases fascinate me with the elaborate plans drug dealers use to move drugs, themselves, bodies, guns, phones, what have you.

Cucumbers and bananas. Who would have thought to check their produce?! (Did they mean plantain bananas though? 'Cause the regular bananas would turn if you open them anywhere, but the plantain kind are only good once the skin has turned, so no one would suspect with those.)

The underground sewage tunnels, oh boy, yuck! Guess all the money and power was worth it for a while to them.

Unfortunately, we know this will not end anything. I'm sure others are set up for takeover. :( It never ends, but I do get happy when a Big Fish is captured.

Jailed Sinaloa cartel drug kingpin Joaquin Guzman escaped from Mexico's Altiplano jail, Saturday night. He was last seen in the showers.

This is the second time 'El Chapo' (shorty) has escaped - it was only last year when offficials announced his recapture with a great fanfare after he'd spent 13 years on the run after the first escape in 2001. He had been serving a 20-year sentence.

If I were THEDONALD - I'd think long and hard about what I just
said in the press about Mexico - especially since he just had a huge
rally in Arizona yesterday bashing Mexicans.

CHICAGO — A federal judge sentenced twin brothers on Tuesday to 14 years in prison each for running a nearly $2 billion North American drug ring, agreeing with prosecutors to drastically reduce their sentences as reward for their cooperation against Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and other Mexican cartel leaders.

“Even though I am not going to sentence you to life, you are leaving here with a life sentence,” he told them. “Each time you start your car (when you are out of prison), you are going to be wondering, is it going to start, or will it explode.”

Rumor has it he is heading to San Francisco.

Since this is in Mexico, will we have to go by mostly rumors? I am wondering how much info is available in Mexico. Media, public records, etc.

This article is a few years old & is very LONG, but really goes into a lot of details about him & his drug empire.

Here is just one paragraph:

But Chapo’s greatest contribution to the evolving tradecraft of drug trafficking was one of those innovations that seem so logical in hindsight it’s a wonder nobody thought of it before: a tunnel. In the late 1980s, Chapo hired an architect to design an underground passageway from Mexico to the United States. What appeared to be a water faucet outside the home of a cartel attorney in the border town of Agua Prieta was in fact a secret lever that, when twisted, activated a hydraulic system that opened a hidden trapdoor underneath a pool table inside the house. The passage ran more than 200 feet, directly beneath the fortifications along the border, and emerged inside a warehouse the cartel owned in Douglas, Ariz. Chapo pronounced it “cool.”

You aren't kidding that is a long article - very informative. I just want to know where he was caught the last time he escaped. In the US or Mexico? I am guessing Mexico since he was in a Mexican prison.

He was caught in Mazatlan, Mexico in one of his condos after 13 years!

The tunnel terminated in a half-built house in a rural farm field near the prison, according to radio transmissions among authorities who cordoned off the structure. They would not confirm the location of the end of the tunnel directly to The Associated Press.

A 74-year-old rancher whose home is about 400 meters from the cordoned property said he had seen a couple in their 30s start building on the property about a year ago. He did not want to be named for safety reasons. He said they were very friendly and not from the area.

“One day my cows made it over to the house and I didn’t see anything strange,” said the rancher, whose home sits between the prison and the other property atop a small rise with a clear view to the prison.

I don't think that they will get any real information out of anyone for fear of getting killed, or have their families tortured & killed, or they were given a large amount of cash & paid off to keep their mouths shut! He most likely is long gone!!

On the account, administered by Guzman's son Ivan, the escapee reportedly wrote: 'If you keep p****** me off I'm going to make you eat your words you *advertiser censored***** blonde milk-s*****'.

The property magnate is taking the threats seriously.

According to TMZ the billionaire has called in the FBI to investigate the source of the Twitter account which warned Trump he would be sorry he spoke out against Mexico.

Documents: U.S. agents knew of 'El Chapo' escape plots in 2014

"Despite being imprisoned in a 'high security' facility, DEA reporting further indicates Guzman-Loera was able to provide direction to his son and other cartel members via the attorneys who visited (him) in prison and possibly through the use of a cellphone provided...by corrupt prison guards," the documents stated.
Following Guzman's capture, according to the documents, his son Ivan Guzman-Salazar became "the de facto leader of the Guzman branch of the Sinaloa Cartel." Guzman's "right-hand man, Damaso Lopez-Nunez" took over one of the four major trafficking organizations that operated under the auspices of the larger Sinaloa Cartel.

It is "premature to accurately predict" what will now happen to the power structure of the organization, but Guzman's escape likely "will affect current leadership," according to the documents.

Wonder if the house being built was a reason to have a backhoe help dig a tunnel? I bet it was all dug from the outside in. Have heard nothing of who owns the house yet.
