Sgt. Craig Sawyer says an officer was in the area of Hwy. 181 and Mosley Road around 6:15 p.m. when he heard a gunshot. The officer investigated and found two kids lying in a backyard, behind a mobile home, suffering from gunshot wounds.

A girl was pronounced dead at the scene. A 3-year-old boy was taken by life flight to USA Medical Center. His condition is unknown.

Good Lord, those children were shot with a rifle!

Police say the circumstances of the shooting are not known at this time, but the children were shot with a rifle.

Officials say they have a suspect in custody, but will not release the suspect’s identity until they determine appropriate charges. They say are working the with district attorney’s office to determine what those charges might be.

Police say they are still investigating the relationship of the children and the suspect, and determining if it was a domestic dispute.

Thank God it was an accident. I was trying to understand how an older brother could shoot his 3 and 5 yr old little siblings with a shotgun, and I couldn't. Knowing it was accidental does not bring his sister back, but at least it was not on purpose. My heart goes out to the whole family, including the poor older brother.:heartbeat: :rose:

How sad and tragic!! What on earth was he doing with a loaded rifle in his lap???

RIP little sister and prayers for the family. :praying:
