A central Ohio man killed his ex-wife outside an apartment when she arrived to pick up their two children

The boy called 911 after the stabbing on Sunday morning in Grove City, just southwest of Columbus. Police said the boy’s mother was picking up the three children from the father’s house after an overnight visit.

The two had a brief argument before the alleged attack, police said. Jeremy Roberts, 38, allegedly answered his door when his ex-wife Candice Roberts, 36, arrived and retrieved a double-edged knife before the attack, police said.

A 41-year-old man could spend the rest of his life in a state psychiatric hospital after a Franklin County judge ruled today that he is incompetent to stand trial in the stabbing death of his ex-wife...

Common Pleas Judge David W. Fais ruled in October 2013 that Jeremy Roberts was unable to understand the charges against him or assist his attorney due to mental illness. He ordered that Roberts be hospitalized at Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare on the Hilltop for treatment in an effort to restore him to competency...

French committed Roberts to the maximum-security unit at the hospital and will retain jurisdiction over him. The judge must approve any change in his status, including his security level at the hospital.

Now competent, man gets life sentence for murdering ex-wife

Nearly five years after he was charged with fatally stabbing his ex-wife outside his Grove City apartment, Jeremy Roberts has recovered enough from his mental illness to take responsibility for the slaying.

Roberts, 43, was sentenced Monday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years after pleading guilty to aggravated murder in the death of Candice R. Roberts.

The sentence, imposed by Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Jenifer French, was recommended by prosecuting and defense attorneys as part of a plea agreement.

The guilty plea comes after years of psychological examinations and court rulings that found Roberts incompetent to stand trial because severe mental illness rendered him unable to understand the charges against him or assist in his defense.

In January 2016, French ruled that he had become competent and could face trial. That ruling was followed by additional psychological examinations after defense attorney Robert Krapenc filed a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity plea for Roberts.

Roberts declined to make a statement in court, but he heard comments from the victim's mother and father before sentencing.

"You had no right to decide to take a life, especially the mother of your children," said her mother, Claudia Myers. "I don't care what you think she did to deserve this ... You are not God."
