IMPORTANT INFORMATION

For a few days in a row, there have been numerous TOS violations on this case. While it may seem harmless to some, we are getting dozens of complaints from other members who want to discuss this case constructively. From now on, there will be more time outs issued to those who repeatedly choose to ignore our guidelines.

Here are just some of the problems that occur over and over:

* Baiting /Trolling / Inciting Conflict: There are times when a member violates our rules by trying to upset other members. Please use your ALERT feature when this happens and DO NOT RESPOND TO THE POSTS. When a moderator is able to deal with the problem, it takes a LOT less time when he/she doesn't have to also deal with all the responses to the offense. Plus, it makes the one who initially started the conflict keep on going.

* Inviting/Baiting: This is when someone says they have information they can't share on the forum. Then someone else asks for them to PM the information. It's like be at a party and whispering secrets to each other and is not allowed here. If you have something private to share, then send a private message and don't announce it on the public thread.

* Dreams/Visions: WS doesn't condone dreams and visions and psychic information. There are plenty of sites out there on the WWW that do, but we are not one of them. We have not found that information to be helpful in solving cases.

* Announcing alerts: Don't announce that you are alerting. Just do your part and make the alert and move on.

* Sleuthing guidelines: We don’t permit any posts discussing the sleuthing of non-players. Considering there have been no suspects or POI’s named to date, that means pretty much no one is permitted to be sleuthed, except Mickey, This is done to protect the innocent. Think about it – suppose your son (or daughter) gave your next door neighbor a ride to the grocery store, dropped them off with the understanding that they had a ride home. That neighbor disappears and is now missing. Do you want hundreds of people sleuthing your background? Knowing where you live, work, your kid’s names, ages, where they go to school? Would you like every skeleton in your closet to be shaken and posted on a public forum for the world to see? It is not right and not fair to innocent people. Most of these people are only a friend or acquaintance by sheer circumstance. They do not deserve the public scrutiny. It is completely understandable for Law Enforcement to take this approach. However, after their investigation, if they find no basis for suspicion and clear these people, they don’t make their records public either. Simply put, it just ain’t cool to do and we don’t do it here at Websleuths.

* Sleuthing other members: It doesn't matter what they are doing here, we do NOT sleuth other members. Anonymity is taken very seriously on Websleuths. If this continues, a member could lose their posting privileges permanently

* Derogatory Name Changes to Case Players/General Name Calling: is not allowed here.

* “Off-Topic” Posts: Off-Topic posts are subject to editing or removal at administrative discretion, and without notification. Members that continuously post off topic may have their posting privileges suspended. This thread is for discussion of locating Mickey Shunick.

We don’t verify every local who follows any case. You are welcome to post photos & maps of the area, post your knowledge about specific areas (e.g., directions, locations, weather conditions, etc..) so we can all have a better understanding. What you cannot do is post information relayed to you by another person (e.g., “I went on a volunteer search last week & another person I met told me “blah blah blah” <insert rumor of your choice> and she said she got it from a co-worker of Mickey’s sister. That is RUMOR and we do not participate in any rumor chasing events here.

An insider is usually someone with direct knowledge. Often a family member or a close friend. Those we do verify. Keep in mind no one is obligated to become verified; we completely respect and understand those who choose not to do so. All we ask is that you not post inside information claiming it as fact.

That all said, we are very careful when verifying members. However, we cannot endorse the content of their posts nor assert as to the truth of what is being stated. It is up to the reader to decide that for themselves. We’re simply letting you know that an Administrator or Owner has spoken with this person, gathered data to investigate that they are who they say they are. We do this to protect the integrity of the information posted here.

None of these rules are new and a more detailed explanation of them can be found here:

I agree. Only if everyone is open carrying.

But my thoughts on open carry differ

If I'm a robber and an open carry person is maybe in the bank or whatever establishment I'm robbing and I see that open carry gun. That's the first person I shoot.

So, I'd rather conceal carry.

Saralsim: What would make you think I'm comparing this Lafayette area with anything regarding campuses in Louisianna? I am looking at it without emotional sentimentality, from an entirely different geographic perspective, and from a very macro level. And my opinion stands--->but posted only to remind people to be safe.

Actually, the word you are looking for is "micro" since you have never been here and base your entire opinion on a 4 year old satellite capture from google maps. Where are you from by the way? Not one bad street in your whole town eh? The areas you are referring to are miniscule in comparisson to the beautiful parts of the city. I've been pretty much everywhere in the US and Lafayette is one of the safest most colorful places I've ever been. So much beautiful landscaping and architecture. The rural areas and shacks are far and in between...don't know what you are referring to there. And let me say, the actual "rural" areas in the surrounding towns are extremely safe in comparisson to urban locations everywhere. I grew up on a farm myself (after moving here from Atlanta) and I absolutely loved it. I'm so glad I got such a well rounded childhood, getting to experience city life and nature first hand. We played outside, we weren't glued to the tv, we lived for adventure and we learned how to form our own opinions without basing it entirely on the mainstream media. The majority of people here are so wonderful. If we get an outsider at work my co-workers jump tp make them feel at home, are truly interested in learning about where they are from and bring them heaping bowls of food. It is not only family oriented here, but we make new people feel at home here as well. To be honest I havent seen that hardly anywhere.

The reason such a huge volunteer effort came from absolute strangers for Mickey is because A. nothing like that ever happens here and B. we genuinely care about our neighbor's well-being

There is much more to a town than a screen shot. You might want to think about that before telling people to "get the heck out of dodge".

Valuable little bit of info. Thanks.

Thank you SO much for the radKIDS info on the previous thread! I had never heard of it before and I want to bring that to my community. The price tag for certification is a bit hefty, but I really, really want to go through the training. What a GREAT program!

Continued from previous thread...

No, but it's by far the best IMO. Another good one is KFM. It uses a lot of the ideas of Jiu Jitsu mixed with pure street fighting experience and methods. Lots of holds, chokes, headbutts, elbows, and knees. They even have biting and eye-gouging thrown in there. It's basically meant to maim your opponent.

But a good core knowledge of Jiu Jitsu basics is invaluable IMO

Seconded. Strongly. From personal experience. I won't get into the details of why, other than to say that after 3 weeks of study, my own BJJ knowledge -- limited as it was -- was put to the test by a drunken 'roidhead at an outdoor concert, and...I passed the test.

I'm such a believer in Jiu Jitsu (Brazilian) that I've had my son studying it for the last several months (Gracie BJJ), and his confidence has skyrocketed. He's a tall, skinny kid who I would characterize as pretty laid back by nature...certainly not a Type A personality. He's learned to assert himself when situationally appropriate, and to defend himself against bigger, stronger people, and to not be afraid to do so.

FYI, Gracie is a form of JJ which is designed to help smaller, weaker folks subdue larger, stronger opponents. It was developed by a frail, under-sized Brazilian named Helio Gracie, for that specific purpose.

There are other effective self-defense methods out there which are worthy of investigation, as well. Search YouTube for "self defense" and a plethora of instructional info will be the result. A few to investigate more fully are Krav Maga, 7 Second Self Defense and, of course, Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Whatever you do, don't waste your time in learning competitive martial arts. There are no rules in a street fight. There is no referee. There are no holds barred. There is no respect for/from an opponent. There is simply survival. Study self-defense, first and foremost. And study methods to hurt or maim an opponent(s) thereafter.

Regarding how safe Lafayette is, the crime rate in 2010 (per 100,000 residents was) 490.1

US Average: 319.1
New York City: 243.6

Also, I find it kind of "funny" how there were so many posts about how Katrina refugees are ruining the city...and now there are all these posts talking about how safe and nice Lafayette is. Which one is it?

As a firm believer in 2nd amendment rights, avid hunter, etc., sadly in many, if not most abduction cases, as is indicated in Mickey Schunick's case, a weapon more than likely wouldn't have prevented her abduction. The first order of business of a predator is to disable the victim and gain compliance/control of them utilizing the element of surprise & a well preplanned attack in most cases.

Okay...

To whomever approached me in the parking lot on Johnston while I was "examining" a white truck--

Yes, you correctly identified me.
Yes, I am "white-whaling" the truck.
No, I am not a police officer or a P.I.
No, I cannot definitively rule out a 2010.
Yes, I considered a Z82 and the Diamond Edition, but I cannot put those options in because I do not have the full video.
Yes, I am upset about that because I don't know if this Z71 had a "4x4" or "off-road" on the decal.
No, you weren't bothering me.

...And yes, I am completely insane.

It's about what area of town you are in really. Yes, there is some crime in the part of town where I live, but there aren't drive bys on a daily basis.

Valuable little bit of info. Thanks.

Its just how I see it.
I have friends in VA that open carry wherever they go.

They pay no mind to the way I think about it and in fact they have stated that by opening carry it has stopped robberies that may have happened to them.

Im sure it has but I just don't want to be that open carry person a potential robber sees and shoots first.

So I conceal. The less a robber knows the better and never give away your ability to defend yourself.

The element of surprise is very effective.

Exactly. Look up Lafayette crime index 3. It's not good to pretend something isn't the way it is. Just because there are so many good things about Lafayette (best kept secret:)) doesn't mean it's perfect. Those numbers spell it out safetywise. That shouldn't be considered insulting.

Thank you and if I presented a different take on things and made some people more aware of what MS's bike journey looks like to an "outsider" and they are more safety-oriented because of it, then I've done my good deed.

Could someone kindly point me to the link of the video where Brettly is speaking on camera immediately after Mickey goes missing; the very first video? I cannot seem to locate it.
