GA - Markea Berry, 16, starved to death, Cobb County, June 2012

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...m_hp_ref=crime

Police arrested Ebony Berry, 38, after someone in her Cobb County home called 911 to report that a 16-year-old girl was unresponsive, CBS Atlanta reported. When officers arrived, the teen was already dead from malnourishment and neglect.
Neighbors said that the girl previously ran away only to be found at a department store, WSBTV reported. Her younger brother had also reportedly run away in the past. He was discovered hiding in a tree.
Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don't say it mean.
We are all just trying to make sense of an unimaginable crime.

The girl was 16. Police said the other children living in the home were fine.

Neighbors in that area said there were signs that something wasn't right at the house.

After a tip to Report It, 24 Hour News 8 learned Berry lived on the southeast side of Grand Rapids before moving away about seven years ago.

A 16-year-old girl weighed just 40 pounds when police say she starved to death at the hands of a mother who "hated her."

Authorities found Markea Blakely-Berry dead on Friday in her Atlanta-area home. Her 38-year-old mom, Ebony Berry, had called authorities after first reaching out to her dad when she found teen and couldn’t revive her.

Scapegoat. Only this child was starved. The others are reported to have appeared healthy and normal weight.

Markea's father Mark Blakely, who did not live with Berry and his daughter, says child protective services (CPS) should have stepped in while the family lived in Grand Rapids.

Michigan CPS launched several investigations, but only one found substantiate abuse, WOOD-TV reports.

"She ran to do wrong," Blakely says of Berry's move to Georgia. "Nobody helped, nobody tried to stop her. The system knew that she wasn't wrapped all the way tight."

the more I uncover, the worse it is. Poor Markea, I am so sorry sweetie. What an awful end to what appears to have been an awful life.

Her family last saw Markea in 2008 during her last visit to Grand Rapids. Family members said they spoke to Markea after that visit, but always while her mother was present so they could not talk openly.

Their concerns mounted over time. Drawings and notes from Markea - mailed without a return address - arrived.

Markea's grandmother said one of the last drawings Markea sent was at Thanksgiving. It showed a table full of food, but empty plates.

"Ham hearts, potato salad. She put it all down there, but when it came to her it was just a blank face. She didn't get to eat," said Goree.

When the family spoke on the phone, Markea couldn't speak, and her mother said the girl was asleep.

"I wish I had the willpower, I wish I had the strength, I wish I had the transportation to just go get them kids," said Goree.

I find it so pathetic when blood-relatives, neighbors, friends know something is wrong and stand back and do nothing. Then when someone dies as a result, they step up and suddenly have much to say - often that someone else should have done something, never them.

OMG I am livid. As an adult I suffered from malnutrition and had an extensive plan for introduction back into the food world. I know I was in pain and suffering when I wasn't able to have food. How dare he? Also he doesn't feel one way or another?! OMG I'm angry.

"If her daughter -- if she did this -- then she did in fact break away from what she learned," he said. "I haven't interacted with her since sharing with her that being hungry is wonderful and convincing her to say it, too."

Chung said he encourages hunger, but not starvation.

"I am surprised. I am shocked. I didn't even know she had a daughter," Chung said of Berry.

    From September 2014:

    http://www.cbs46.com/story/26666175/...arvation-death

A mother accused of starving her 16-year-old daughter to death pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Tuesday in a plea deal...

During Tuesday's hearing, prosecutors said Markea kept a journal detailing her starving herself. However, they also said Berry never took her daughter to the hospital for malnourishment. "We do believe that this defendant basically should have taken this child to the hospital, the doctor, something, over the course of these couple of years... We believe (Berry) wasn't intentionally starving this child, that the child did have some sort of eating disorder"...

She was sentenced to 30 years in prison, minus two served, and 10 years probation, which she will start immediately following her release around the year 2042. She is also not to have any contact with children until she is 75 years old, including those who may be in public.
