A 21-year-old man has been jailed in the shooting death of Denver police Officer Celena Hollis in a killing that brought community members out to show support for police.
Hollis, the mother of a 12-year-old daughter, was killed at a jazz concert in City Park.
Rollin Oliver was being held Monday on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of Hollis, who was shot in the head after attempting to break up a fight involving two groups of people. The trouble occurred as the concert was ending at about 8 p.m. Sunday.
Hollis was in uniform, patrolling the concert with other off-duty officers working as security for the event.
Hollis, a patrol officer in District 2, moved to Denver in 2005 from Detroit, where she also served on the police.
She was easy to get along with and always had a smile on her face," said Lt. Ron Thomas, an organization board member. Roberts said Hollis was a common sight patrolling the streets of Park Hill.
"She was very respectful to the kids she related to them because of her experience being from Detroit," he said.
Celena Hollis, a Denver police officer, was killed June 24, 2012, as she rushed to break up a gang fight during a jazz concert at City Park. Her killer, 22-year-old Rollin Oliver, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced Friday to 26 years in prison.
