DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — A Walton County jury found Barry Davis not guilty Tuesday of stealing and selling a 2008 Corvette belonging to Miramar Beach resident John Gregory Hughes.

Hughes was last seen four days before the May 11 transaction and remains unaccounted for. A woman he was dating, Panama City resident Heidi Rhodes, has also been missing since about May 7.

For Immediate Release
February 13, 2013

Sheriff Michael A. Adkinson, Jr. announces the arrest of Barry Davis, 27, of DeFuniak Springs, in the homicide of Heidi Rhodes, 41, of Panama City Beach, and John Hughes, 49, of Santa Rosa Beach. These charges stem from months of investigation and over 2,000 man hours by Walton County Sheriff’s Office investigators. Law enforcement have served numerous search warrants and subpoenas, exhausted leads, conducted interviews and worked with several other jurisdictions during the length of this case. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has working closely with the State Attorney’s Office in conjunction with this case.

Horrendous.. and from the sounds of it they'll never recover any remains :( Hope what they have is enough to put him away for good.

Bodies still missing, suspect in custody
The bodies of John Hughes and Heidi Rhodes have never been found, but it seems likely that sometime in 2015 Barry Davis will be tried for murdering the couple. Hughes, 49, of Santa Rosa Beach, and Rhodes, 41, of Panama City Beach, had not been seen since May 7, 2012 when Davis was arrested in February of 2013 and charged with murdering both. The State Attorney’s Office has said it will seek the death penalty in the Walton County case, which is scheduled for trial March 9.

Circuit Court Judge Kelvin Wells set the 2015 trial date last April and Assistant State Attorney Bobby Elmore, who will prosecute Davis, said both he and defense attorney Spiro Kypreos are working diligently to be prepared.
“I’m planning for March, but you never know,” Elmore said.

Murder trial to begin in case of missing couple

When Davis goes on trial Monday in DeFuniak Springs for first-degree murder, prosecutor Bobby Elmore likely will tell jurors that Davis burned the bodies of his victims, and use testimony or previous statements from Davis’ ex-girlfriend to bolster his case.

Elmore declined to discuss specifics of his trial strategy last week, but 1st Judicial Circuit State Attorney Bill Eddins said at the time Davis was charged with murder in 2013 that he was confident his office would obtain a guilty verdict in a no-body trial.

If Davis is found guilty of the two murders, the state intends to seek the death penalty.

Barry Davis was found guilty this past May.

In August, a judge sentenced him to death.

Charley Project - John Gregory Hughes

Charley Project - Heidi Ann Rhodes

Details of Disappearance
Rhodes and her boyfriend, John Hughes, were last seen together in Bay County, Florida on the evening of May 7, 2012. Hughes lived in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and Rhodes in Panama City Beach, Florida. Neither of them have ever been heard from again, and they weren't reported missing for weeks. It's uncharacteristic of the pair to leave without warning.

On May 11, an acquaintance of Hughes named Barry T. Davis Jr. drove Hughes's Corvette to Orlando, Florida and sold it for $15,000. He was charged with grand theft in connection with the incident and, at his trial in October 2012, his attorney argued Hughes asked Davis to sell the car for him because he was in debt to drug dealers and needed money to "disappear" and move to Barbados. Davis was acquitted. He has a prior criminal record for battery, burglary, grand theft and marijuana possession. A photo of him is posted below this case summary.

On May 20, thirteen days after Rhodes and Hughes were last seen, Davis was seen driving Hughes's pearl-white 2003 Cadillac Escalade with the Florida license plate number 912NWJ. The vehicle itself wasn't found until October 5; it had been covered with a tarp and parked in the back of a property in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

In late July 2012, Davis charged with grand theft and burglary. Neighbors had seen him loading Hughes's belongings into a U-Haul truck the month he and Rhodes disappeared. Davis admitted he had done this, but said he'd only been helping Hughes move to another location. Authorities found furniture and other property belonging to Hughes in Davis's possession. He had also pawned some items and sold others online. He gave some of Hughes's belongings to the people who helped him load Davis's things into the U-Haul, as payment for their work. One of the items he gave away was a lamp; later, authorities recovered it and discovered Hughes's blood on it. Davis also made numerous withdrawals from Hughes's bank accounts, writing checks totaling $15,900. Hughes had gotten a substantial financial settlement after a workplace injury, and had assets of over $400,000.

In February 2013, Davis was charged with the couple's murder. Tiffani Steward, his former girlfriend, testified against him; she stated she saw Davis beat and strangle Rhodes and Hughes and drown them in the bathtub, and she also saw him burning a tote bag which he claimed contained the victims' dismembered remains. He was convicted and sentenced to death.

Davis is now on Florida's death row, awaiting execution. Foul play is suspected in Rhodes and Hughes's disappearances due to the circumstances involved.
