Does anyone have any more information on Lorraine Herbster's disappearance? I posted this case a year ago and got no replies or comments, although there has been some mention of other New Jersey cases from around that time frame.

I wonder how valid it is when some serial killers are said to have certain "preferences" in selecting victims. I doubt that the majority of them stick to any such pattern, but perhaps there are some. Ted Bundy, for instance, was said to prefer girls with long straight dark hair, parted down the middle.

Below are two links. The first is to Lorraine Herbster's photo and case history on Doenetwork. She disappeared in 1979. Below that is a link to an unknown girl murdered in Connecticut in 1975. I was struck by the resemblence, even though the unknown girl died four years before Lorraine disappeared.

I will try not to get in too big a hurry to get my info right this time. Having said that: I ran across this website listing a Jane doe and also listing some possible matches.

https://mavdisk.mnsu.edu/bittid/

possible match listing (scroll down to find the name Lorraine Rea Herbster)
https://mavdisk.mnsu.edu/bittid/missingperson.htm
Doesnt sound too likely but I post it to let the rest of you also look over the info.
***********************

I also ran into this person whose apparent age does not seem right but the surname is right and the middle initial is an "L" - Maybe a relative? The face sort of looks like a relative to me.

The eyebrows look similar on this pic but not a likely match if thats a married name

Thats about all that has popped up on the first couple of passes with free search engines.

I ran this young lady's name through NewspaperArchives, didn't come up with anything.

Richard,

It sounds like someone knows something. The reports do not contain much to go on. I wish more families would create websites and submit all the info they have collected personally. Sometimes it's the smallest detail that can solve a case. I think it would certainly be in their best interest to get the info out there.

I would be willing to help create web sites for families who may not have the ability to do it for themselves.

In reading the information on Lorainne from the Charley project, it says when she left work with a co-worker, she was dropped off within two miles of her home, that doesn't seem to make much sense to me, I wonder if this co-worker was a woman or a man. There are more articles on Lorraine at Newslibrary. You can do a search on her name and purchase individual articles.

I wonder if DeBardeleben might have had anything to do with this case.
He was said to have worked about 39 states and was allegedly active in 1979.

I note one of his possible victems was also last seen wearing a white sweater.("a hip-length white sweater with brown buttons ")
And is similar in size and hair color.

"white coat sweater "

Lorraine Rea Herbster was 5'4 & 125 lbs. & brn hair-March 9, 1979 -New Jersey
Judith Ann Chartier was 5'5, 135 pounds & Brown curly hair-June 5, 1982 -Massachusetts

"The agents realized that DeBardeleben was possibly the elusive suspect in two cases of abduction and rape in 1979. He had often posed as a law enforcement officer, gaining the trust of his victims or insisting they accompany him before forcing them to do his will. "

Although he was said to be active in 1979 I don't know where he was that year.

From the Philadelphia press
August 7, 2001

Lorraine "Lori" Herbster left her job in Mount Holly at 4 p.m. March 9th, 1979, never to be reported seen again.

A colleague from her electronics job drove the 17-year-old halfway home, and she set out to walk the rest of the two miles to her Westampton home.

She never made it there. A witness reported seeing her walking at 5:15 p.m. Police doubted she was a runaway, citing the personal items she left home.

Bruce Reed, now the township's police chief, was a patrol officer when Herbster vanished.

" We work on the case, actively, all the time" he said " Any time a body is located anywhere and it's anywhere close to a match, we get a teletype. We've probably had at least 300 or 400 possibilities over the last 20 years, but none of them were her."

The unsolved case plagues Reed, who brags that the township- with 8,000 residents in 12 square miles- hasn't had a homicide since 1986.

"We really would like to find out what happened" he said.

In addition to Lorraine, there seems to be a lot of girls who went missing in this time frame. Also in a very close proximity. I have never found any information about a serial killer in the area. These girls were all between 14-17 years of age. Usually these were not investigated back then. They were presumed runaways.

Hollow,
Between you, me, and this computer screen my money is on the co-worker. No mention of why she was dropped off 2 miles from home. I would make bet it was a man. "I am such a cynic" :slap: But then again some of the most obvious answers are the right ones.

Yaya, I think the same thing. Why in the world wouldn't they just drive her all of the way home. I bet if they ever find her, the person who drove her home will be the first person the police look at again.

Happy ending to Tammy Jordan case but others from the county still missing

The case of Tamela "Tammy" Jordan's disappearance remained open for nearly 10 years. No matter how cold the trail went, the search never ended and police continued to publicize the Burlington Township teenager's disappearance in hopes of finding a fresh lead or clue to her whereabouts.

[snip]

But others remain missing.

[snip]

Lorraine "Lori" Herbster of Westampton was 17 when she disappeared March 9, 1979. She was last seen walking home after a co-worker gave her a ride from her new job at a Mount Holly electronics firm to a corner near her home in the Tarnsfield development. She was never seen again. Police have never been able to substantiate rumors that she was murdered and her body dumped at a local construction site.
