The statement says the timer reported LeMaitre's position to race officials when he reached the bottom of the mountain at 6:20 p.m. According to the statement, he told LeMaitre's wife to expect him shortly, but to notify race officials if he was not back within an hour and a half. She notified them her husband was missing about an hour and forty minutes later.

Michael LeMaitre Missing: Family Loses Hope Of Finding Extreme Runner Alive

Peggy LeMaitre no longer holds out hope that her husband is alive five weeks – and multiple searches – after he vanished on Alaska's Mount Marathon during a popular extreme race.

"The only hope I have is that they will find him and bring him home, so we can put him to rest," the Anchorage woman said.

I think people getting lost in Alaskan Wilderness and perishing are common enough that they do just "fade away".

“Mike and I grew up together,” Mr. Reed said. “We both lived on Knox Street and hung out together in high school. Then we went our separate ways, but we’ve always kept in touch.”

He said Mr. LeMaitre was devoted to his family and loved the outdoors.

“He was an avid river rat when we were in school,” he said. “We used to go up to Stovin Island, and the rest of us jumped off the cliff, but he had to jump off the top of the light pole that was there. The 20-foot drop from the cliff wasn’t high enough for him.”

She said his family most likely will seek to have him declared officially dead next month.

'Last Man Up': Michael LeMaitre, Mt. Marathon and Alaskans' addiction to danger

Runners World magazine this month takes a lengthy look at the mysterious disappearance of 65-year-old Anchorage resident Michael LeMaitre in the 2012 Mount Marathon Race in Seward. LeMaitre was the last man up the mountain that day, and race volunteers left the turnaround point before LeMaitre got there. He was never seen again.

The Last Man Up

Like a lot of things in Alaska, the annual Mount Marathon Race in Seward is famously brutal, even dangerous. Which is precisely why Michael LeMaitre ran it--the last day he was seen alive.
