Holmes Bought Rifle, Bullets During Month After School Exit
    Updated July 24, 2012, 11:38 p.m. ET

AURORA, Colo.—In early June, first-year doctoral student James Holmes stood before professors of neuroscience here for an oral exam that marked the beginning of at least four more years of intense study of how the brain works.

Days later, though, school administrators received an email from Mr. Holmes saying that he dropped out of the program. He didn't give a reason.

    Quotes snipped:

The mail was sent to a psychologist at the university, but the letter wasn't discovered until Monday.
Ed. note: An original version of this story stated that the package sent to the university sat unopened for days. In a statement released late Wednesday, the University of Colorado-Denver/Anschutz Medical Campus denied those reports and said the package wasn't delivered by U.S. Postal Service until Monday, July 23

Colorado shootings suspect: Who is James Holmes?

    Jul 20, 2012

James Eagan Holmes, the suspect in the Colorado shooting rampage, is described as a quiet, standoffish, graduate student from San Diego who recently dropped out of a doctoral program at the University of Colorado medical school, where he had done research.

He graduated with honors from the University of California-Riverside two years ago.
The Denver Post, citing "information provided" to the newspaper, reports that the suspect described himself last year in an apartment rental application as a student who was "quiet and easygoing."

Batman killer claims amnesia; complains about jail food; etc.

    By Daily Mail Reporter

    Two interesting snippets:

It also emerged a neighbor of Holmes said he remembers seeing him leave his apartment carrying his rifle bag and target most mornings starting from around mid-June, adding merit to the speculation he had been meticulously planning the massacre for weeks.

James Holmes' name was written in the return address box. The package was turned up after an extensive search of the campus' mail room. It is not known why it was not delivered to its intended recipient.

Authorities then obtained a warrant from a district judge to open the package, which is when its chilling contents were discovered.

Defense: Aurora shooting suspect saw psychiatrist

3 snippets (I was mindful of copyright issues)

Previously, CBS News senior correspondent John Miller reported that U.S. postal inspectors had been searching through the mailboxes near Holmes' home looking for letters and packages he might have sent out. They didn't find any, but that's because the package had already been sent before the shooting.
Before opening it, the sheriff's bomb squad handled it with a robot and took an X-ray, just in case there were explosives inside.
Meanwhile, authorities also are investigating whether Holmes practiced shooting in the remote mountains northwest of Denver.

Here's an article that explains what the school's program is all about.

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,1752281.story

Interviews with top directors of the university's graduate program, and others outside the school, provide a glimpse into the lives of those who choose such a rigorous course of study. The Colorado program has been largely shuttered to public view since Holmes' arrest July 20, a month after he announced plans to abandon his graduate studies there.

The interviews on that campus were conducted on the basis that Holmes not be discussed, but what emerges is a vivid portrait of the intense world in which the 24-year-old student lived over the last year.

How James Holmes will be evaluated by psychiatrists

    By Dr. Keith Ablow
    Published July 24, 2012

James Holmes, the suspect responsible for the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, has begun a legal journey that will include an extensive psychiatric evaluation and may include a plea that he is not criminally responsible for his acts--an "insanity" plea. As a forensic psychiatrist, I have participated in many such evaluations and then rendered expert testimony about killers in court.
    Here's how they work:
