James Holmes court document revised four days after its release ( link )
By Jeremy P. Meyer, The Denver Post, August 01, 2012

As media outlets continued to clamor for information in the criminal case against suspected theater killer James Eagan Holmes, a previously released document that had been widely publicized was altered slightly on Tuesday to remove a key piece of information.

The motion by defense attorneys, originally released Friday, was altered to black out a section that revealed Holmes was a patient of University of Colorado psychiatrist Dr. Lynne Fenton.

    [...]

No explanation was given for why the motion now is redacted four days after it had been published on the Colorado Judicial Branch's website.

Also blacked out was a reference to the Colorado statute that covers patient-physician confidentiality in a court case.

CU Psychiatrist Called Threat-Team Members About Holmes ( link, h/t HastingsChi )
Aurora, Colo., shooting suspect James Holmes came to the attention of the threat assessment committee at the University of Colorado but no further action was taken because he left the school more than a month before the attack that killed 12 and injured 58, sources told ABC News.

ABC News has learned that Dr. Lynne Fenton, the psychiatrist who was treating Holmes, 24, at the school, was also a key member of the university's threat assessment team. The group of experts were responsible for protecting the school from potentially violent students.

KMGH-TV, ABC News' affiliate in Denver, reported exclusively that, according to sources, by early June, Fenton had informed other members of the team about her concerns regarding Holmes.

But on June 10 -- three days after Holmes bought an assault weapon and added it to his already growing arsenal -- he suddenly told the university that he was dropping out of the neurosciences doctoral program with no explanation.

AURORA - The psychiatrist treating the accused Colorado movie theater gunman was so concerned about his behavior that she mentioned it to her colleagues, saying he could potentially be a danger to others, CNN affiliate KMGH reported Wednesday, citing sources with knowledge of the investigation.

The psychiatrist's concerns surfaced in early June, nearly six weeks before the July 20 killings inside a movie theater in Aurora, sources told the Denver station.

"One of the most difficult aspects is knowing when immediate action is required, or if there is time to convene the BETA team to discuss the issues," the minutes say.

"Generally, if you believe the threat is imminent, call campus police. If you think it's best to involve the BETA team, contact Lynne Fenton," the minutes say.

Meanwhile, sources familiar with the criminal investigation tell CALL7 Investigator John Ferrugia that Fenton and other key witnesses at CU have not been interviewed by police. There is a question of privileged information due to Fenton's doctor-patient relationship with Holmes. Anyone involved with Holmes' care can also claim the privilege. Sources say this issue is likely to be decided by the judge in case.

    Finding Troubled Students
    http://www2.tbo.com/news/education-n...nts-ar-452890/

In the decades since the Whitman massacre, and especially since the deadly Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, colleges and universities have worked to identify students with the potential for violence, with an eye toward getting to them before it all goes bad.

Called "threat assessment teams," they bring together professionals from across campus, including police, to identify students with emotional problems of any kind.
Referrals also could come from a parent, who believes a son acted depressed on break; a student who saw a roommate purging; a professor who observed a serious slip in grades or out-of-place, violent imagery in a school paper.

The team assesses the "level of concern." The majority of cases so far at USF have been considered low or moderate concern. Only 3 percent of the 314 students served in the 2011-12 school year were considered an extreme threat, leading, perhaps, to referral to a psychiatric hospital.

A small number of students act surprised when the team reaches out, usually by email; but the majority seem relieved that someone has noticed, Larson says.

"We tell them this is not about punishment," she says. "We say we want to assist you, to identify those stressors and create a pathway to success."

The Exit Doors of the theater.

    http://www.denverpost.com/investigat...alarms-are-not

This article has details on the exit doors and the laws in CO for fire codes.

Bel Mar's theater 9 has a door to the side of the screen leading to the parking lot, similar to what appears to be the arrangement at the Aurora multiplex. That would be in keeping with the international fire code used by Aurora and many other cities, which requires two exits from a room holding up to 500 patrons.

The capacity of Aurora's theater 9 has not yet been released. Attorneys hired by Aurora have cited a broad interpretation of a judge's gag order as reason to refuse requests from The Denver Post for copies of the building plans for the Century 16 there.

Each year, Diego Restrepo, co-director of CU Denver's NeuroScience Center, and a group of faculty select three of the most promising first-year doctoral students and three second-year students to split the grant.

At CU Denver, first-year doctoral students take courses that include cellular and molecular neurobiology and biomedical core courses, Ribera said. Most of the roughly six years it takes to earn that Ph.D., though, are spent working — sometimes night and day — in a lab.

First-year students, such as Holmes, rotate through three labs, working with a different researcher in each for 12 weeks.
Every year, 100 or so budding scientists apply to the CU Denver doctoral program in neuroscience. Ultimately, only about six are admitted, said program director Angie Ribera.

In 2011, Holmes was one of the six.

Neuroscience is a relatively new discipline, becoming more attractive to doctoral students over the past decade or so because of the intrigue of the as-yet unexplained. It is the study of how nerve cells communicate with one another, and how the brain generates thoughts and ideas, controls movement and processes vision, smell and hearing.

James Holmes was among elite in neuroscience before Aurora theater massacre - The Denver Post

Navy veteran killed in Colorado movie theater massacre may have tried to stop gunman

    Published August 04, 2012

RENO, Nev. A Navy veteran who died after throwing himself in front of a friend during the Colorado movie theater shooting was remembered Friday for his fearlessness and optimism.
"Law enforcement is leaning toward he was trying to get the (suspect's) gun to save people's lives," said Roland Lackey, an Air Force veteran who officiated the service. "He was a hero, and I salute him."
