Concerns are growing for a missing oil industry executive after a fraudster tried to sell her flat by posing as her brother.

A "significant amount" of the businesswoman's personal property has also gone missing, but DCI McFarlane would not reveal what has disappeared.

Her brother Chris Waugh, 53, who lives in Cumbria, said it was "a very distressing moment" to discover the conman had posed as him.

But police now believe the flat might have been the scene of an abduction by individuals intent on taking over Carole Waugh's life. They are examining her relationships with friends in London, her business connections and her habits in an attempt to find those responsible.

An extensive forensic search is being carried out inside the property.

Police are hunting a number of individuals in connection with the disappearance.

Eight people have been arrested. One woman remains in custody, a man has appeared in court in connection with the case, and six individuals have been released on police bail.

The homicide and serious crime squad is involved now. This doesn't look good. :(

Statement from the Met:

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Carole Waugh have issued CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with their investigation.

The images of the man were taken from CCTV outside Sainsburys in Crown Road, Enfield at approximately 14:55 on 10 July 2012, where a bank card belonging to Ms Waugh was used at an ATM machine.

Anyone who can identify the man pictured, is asked to contact the police incident room on 020 8721 4205 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police continue to appeal for help in tracing Ms Waugh from the Marylebone, who has been missing for two months.

Ms Waugh, 50 (20/6/62) of Tressard Court, Harrowby Street W1 has not been seen since early May and concerns are growing for her welfare.

The last believed sighting of Ms Waugh was in central London on 4 May 2012 - this is unconfirmed.

She has never gone missing before.

Following Ms Waugh's disappearance, there have been a number of fraudulent transactions associated with Ms Waugh's bank account.

Ms Waugh's brother, Chris Waugh, 53, has appealed for information to help trace his sister.

He said: "We are all very proud of my sister. We are from a mining community in the north east and Carole wanted to improve herself and take any opportunities that life offered her. She is very focussed, strong and driven and her big break came when she got a job in an oil company working in Libya, which she loved, returning to London in 2008.

"The last time we saw Carole was at Easter when we all got together in Durham. We had a great time and we were all very excited about Carole's 50th birthday party in June. We were planning how we would celebrate and I was looking forward to making a fuss of her, as she did for my birthday.

"There was nothing to suggest she would go missing. It was all very strange and completely out of character because my sister rings my mother every other day and suddenly, within days of getting together at Easter, the phone calls just stopped.

"We are all very concerned about Carole. Her disappearance is completely out of character and we are extremely anxious and afraid for her welfare.

"I appeal to anybody that has worked with Carole, socialised with Carole; has met or knows of her, to come forward with any small bit of information they may have and assist our family - as that information may fit into the jigsaw that could help us to locate Carole sooner rather than later.

DCI John McFarlane of the Homicide and Serious Command is leading the missing person investigation.

He said: "Ms Waugh is a successful businesswoman and her disappearance is completely out of character.

"Following her disappearance, there have been a number of fraudulent transactions associated with Ms Waugh's bank account.

"We now know that, in addition to at least three women impersonating of Ms Waugh, a man has also been impersonating her brother Chris and endeavouring to raise finances, including trying to sell her flat. He is described as a white male, tall and aged in his 50s.

"There are also a number of her personal possessions that cannot currently be located."

"I'm very concerned for her safety and I appeal to anyone who has known her since she returned from Libya in 2008 to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

"Ms Waugh had a circle of friends and I have spoken to a number of them; however, I need to speak to more so that I can build a complete picture of Carole's life, that includes anyone who has met her socially or personally."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Sutton on 020 8721 4205; if you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

To her family she was a successful and well-travelled businesswoman but, as police investigate the mysterious disappearance of Carole Waugh, evidence is mounting that she may have lived a double life as an escort.

Yet as they peel back the layers, detectives are uncovering a different side to Waugh which her distressed relatives knew nothing about.
They have information that she may have worked as an escort and are investigating her use of dating and escort websites. The Guardian understands she may also have advertised on an adult website and worked from her flat in Harrowby Street, Marylebone.

Oh my goodness, bless her heart....an escort? That's tough to fathom. I know her family must be very distressed. Praying for them all. I hope LE is able to find out what happened to her and that those who are guilty are punished.

It is beginning to sound similar to the Claudia Lawrence case. There seems to be a lot more people involved in this case though.

Hopefully that means the police will solve this quickly....
