TROY, Mich. -
Troy police are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 55-year-old man.

During a press conference Monday, Lt. Robert Redmond said Patrick Joseph Mikes left his home in the 2000 block of Homewood Drive Friday night on a bike ride but never came back.

He was reported missing two days later by his children, who are 21 years old and 16 years old...

Troy Police Capt. Bob Redmond said there were signs of a struggle at the home.

“Investigators are in the process of piecing that evidence together in an effort to determine if this assault is related to Mr. Mikes’ disappearance,” a press release states.

One person is in custody and being questioned, but no charges have been filed, and police are unable to release any additional information about that person.

“It would be premature to indicate that we are focusing on any one individual as a suspect at this juncture, as the investigation is ongoing,” the release states.

Redmond was unable to provide much information, but did say that police are seeking any information at all that anyone might have about Mikes.

“We are seeking information from anyone who may be aware of Mr. Mikes’ bike routes or general routines, as well as locations he might frequent. In addition, anyone who might have any information about his associates, information as to why someone might want to hurt him, or anyone who may have had recent contact with him, should contact the Troy Police Department at 248-524-3477.

The youngest son is 16, which might account for them not releasing any information. He's still a juvenile.

No new information other than Mr. Mikes is a widower (from LE press conference). Unless Mikes indicated to them that he would be gone longer than an evening bike ride, why did his sons wait until Sunday to report their father missing? Signs of a struggle/assault in the home doesn't bode well for a positive outcome in this case. :moo:

Avid rider last seen Friday; evidence of assault in his house

By Mike Martindale
The Detroit News

Troy — Police made a public plea Monday for information about a 55-year-old Troy man whose sons say went for a bicycle ride last Friday afternoon in his upscale neighborhood and never returned.

Patrick Joseph Mikes, an avid bicyclist, was last seen at 5:30 p.m. Friday headed out for a ride from his home in the 2000 block of Homewood, say his 16- and 21-year-old sons, who reported him missing at 9:30 a.m. Sunday — 40 hours later.

He said Mikes has been widowed since his wife died of a brain tumor a few years ago, leaving him with a son and daughter who are in college, and another son in his mid-teens.

Neighbors often saw Mikes leaving for bike rides multiple times a week.

"The biggest thing I was wondering was: Was he on his bike?" Waggoner said. "My wife said maybe he got hit by a car. I thought maybe there was a homicide, there was so much going on."

Stella Patra, who has lived in the house across the street from Mikes for 20 years, said she saw investigators drive off with items from the house, and police towed away a couple of cars.

"I hope I'm wrong, but I thought they had pieces of carpet," she said. "My God, it is scary."

There isn't much interest here about this missing man, but the neighborhood where Mikes lives is less than three miles from my home. The POI has been in custody for questioning for quite a while now. How long can this individual be held without charges being filed?

I'm paying attention. Just have nothing to add. It sure sounds like one (or more) of his kids are involved. This family has endured a lot of difficulty (obviously). Hope he is found soon (and you feel safe!)

JMO etc.

I'm afraid that this might end up like another local case where the adopted son murdered his father and caused his mother and a brother serious injury. :(

The 21-year-old son of a missing Troy man is set to be arraigned this morning on charges that he misused credit cards, according to the court and investigators.

The son of Patrick Mikes, also named Patrick Mikes, is expected to be arraigned at about 10 a.m. today at 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills, Judge Lisa Asadoorian said.

Auburn Hills Police Deputy Director Thomas Hardesty said the 21-year-old is being charged with illegal financial transactions and was being held in the jail at the Troy Police Department. He declined to discuss the case today, saying it is linked to the disappearance of the man's father. He referred all other questions to Troy Police.

Neighbors say they saw police take the younger Patrick Mikes away in the back of a police car on Sunday, the day the 21-year-old and his 16-year-old brother reported their father missing.

The son of a missing Oakland County man has been charged with three counts of credit card fraud.

Auburn Hills Police say Patrick Mikes, Jr. used his brother Andrew's AMEX card without his permission on three separate occasions.

####

Patrick Mikes, Jr. is being called suspect in the disappearance of his father, as well as a person of interest in a violent altercation that took place in the basement of Mikes' home before his disappearance.

Patrick Mikes Jr., 21, was arraigned Wednesday in Auburn Hills. Prosecutors say he is accused of stealing his 16 year-old brother's credit card and using it to buy dinner and a movie the night before their father disappeared.

Troy Capt. Robert Redmond said Mikes' sons did not give "a coherent response" to the time it took to report him missing. Prosecutors called the younger Mikes a suspect in "an ongoing missing person's case." Bond was set at $50,000.

Patrick Mikes, a psychology and pre-med senior at Notre Dame University, was arraigned before Rochester Hills District Judge Lisa Asadoorian for the offenses, all felonies punishable by up to five years in prison.

####

Police also say he is also a potential threat to family members, including his brother, Andrew.

####

Neighbors said Mikes and his two sons led a quiet life and were frequently seen playing catch with a football or basketball in their driveway. The boys have been seen planting flowers in the yard.

One neighbor, Stella Patre, said the Mikes family moved into the neighborhood about 10 years ago when Mikes' wife was seriously ill.

"I can't believe either of the boys would have anything to do with his disappearance," she said. "They have already had so much grief in their lives. First their mother, and now, maybe their father taken from them.

"I'm hoping for the best."
