Richard H. Bowman, b. April 8, 1921, in Pennsylvania, was jailed in the 1940s at Folsom and San Quentin in California, for car theft from Los Angeles County. He also had a car theft record in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1939. His Folsom records show him as divorced with one child. He was discharged from there June 4, 1950.

His 1944 record shows him as having a tattoo of a cross and wreath that says "In memory of mother" so presumably his mother was dead by then.

In 1940, at age 18, he was in a reformatory in Scioto, Ohio (presumably for the 1939 car theft). He shows that he completed 4 years of high school, and is single.

In 1935, so age 13 or 14, he was living in Detroit, Michigan.

I can't find any record of him before then, or of his marriage or child's birth.

He may have used an alias after he got out of prison. If he did, he will be difficult to impossible to trace. We can hope a family member will perhaps search on the internet, find this site, and ask for more information.

If we could find a marriage record for him, it might allow us to track his ex-wife, and see if the child is still living.

I found an alternate SS record with his same SS number and same date of death but the date of birth is different. It says "change in DOB" and this record lists his parents names. The alternate DOB is April 8, 1918. His full name is Richard Harvey Bowman. Perhaps more can be found under the 1918 DOB?

I don't know if we're allowed to post his parents names here? I'm new to the unclaimed forum, thanks.

I think it is okay if they are deceased, and with a son born in 1918, they would have to be.

Ok, thanks! Here is the SS record with alternate DOB:

Name: Richard Harvey Bowman
SSN: 382013393
Gender: Male
Race: White
Birth Date: April 8, 1918
Birth Place: Bigler Clear, Pennsylvania [Clearfield, Pennsylvania]
Death Date: 30 Jul 1993
Father: George R Bowman
Mother: Olive M. Turner
Type of Claim: Change in DOB.
Notes: Feb 1937: Name listed as RICHARD HARVEY BOWMAN;
17 Sep 1993: Name listed as RICHARD H BOWMAN

I didn't find much on his parents. A couple with their same names was listed as living in Modesto, CA in 1926, 1933 and 1934 city directories.
Richard Harvey Bowman would have been a child/teen in 1926-1934, no matter which DOB is correct. But I didn't find them in census records yet to verify those are his parents in the city directories.

It is unlikely that Richard Harvey Bowman (1921-1993) was actually born in 1918 because his father George R. Bowman was seriously wounded in WW I in 1918 and sent home (arriving in New Jersey from France) in 1919.
