A man who escaped a Florida prison in 1977 only to be recaptured three decades later in the Inland Empire is now suspected of killing at least four women in Southern California during his years on the run.

"It is a very interesting case that spans decades ... it is a pity that he died before we could finally catch up with him," said LAPD Robbery Homicide Capt. Billy Hayes.

Larry D. Hubbard, who was found living in Pomona after escaping Florida following a conviction for a 1974 robbery, has been linked to two unsolved Los Angeles murders in 1980 and two more in 2000 in Pomona and Riverside County, LAPD detectives said.

The first victim, Sonia Smith, 25, was killed on August 19, 1980. She was found bound, raped and strangled in an abandoned field in Los Angles. The second, Phyllis McClinton, also 25, was killed in an almost identical way on November 4, 1980, and her body also dumped in an abandoned Los Angeles field. At the time investigators of the McClinton murder developed a person of interest in the case after a 1980 assault on a Los Angeles prostitute.

So back in 2010, L.A. detectives revealed that DNA linked the murders of three women. All three were prostitutes, and it now was known that all three were victims of the same killer. It would be two more years before investigators used DNA to put a name on the killer.

By digging through old records and looking at forensic evidence and DNA, investigators discovered that the three victims were linked to the same murderer.

"We got one DNA sample off of Fields, and one on Pomona, and a partial sample in Los Angeles," says Brown.
