17-year-old N.Y. girl charged with killing her father

TROY, N.Y. (AP) A 17-year-old upstate New York girl told police her angry father gave her an ultimatum early Friday: She could kill him or he'd kill her then himself.

Trinity Copeland told police she begged her father to change his mind and that neither one of them had to get hurt, but he insisted. So, she said, she used his handgun to shoot 47-year-old Harland Copeland once in the head in the apartment they shared in the industrial city on the Hudson River near Albany.

"He said that he was going to kill us both or I was going to have to kill him," she told police in the statement released Friday. "I said that I don't want to. He was like, then I'm going to kill you right now

Grand jury to hear case
Updated 11:45 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, 2012

TROY — The case against a 17-year-old accused of killing her father will be presented to a grand jury.

Trinity Copeland is being held without bail at the Rensselaer County jail. Her attorney, Matthew Smalls, agreed to waive her bail hearing Tuesday in City Court.

This is bizarre. If the story is true (and I'm leaning toward thinking it is) what a completely horrible thing that this girl went through.

"He was like, 'I'm not going to say it again.' I was like, 'Why do I have to kill you, why do I have to kill you?' He said either way he was going to die and he was giving me a way out."
Her father laid back on the couch.
"He said do it," she told police. "I told him that I loved him and that I was sorry. Then I did it. I shot him."

I lean toward believing her also. And if I had been faced with that choice, I would have done the same as she did.

Do we know if her father had a history of mental disorders, etc?

So far, I tend to believe her, just because it is such a bizarre tale to tell, for a 17-year old.

Ceresia said that while he was mindful of the defendant’s young age, lack of criminal history, and the remorse she expressed in her statement, he felt that the defendant has not accepted responsibility for her actions.
