OCONTO FALLS — Authorities still are searching for an 18-year-old man who went missing early New Year’s Day.

Joseph Koebach was last seen at about 12:30 a.m. at a New Year’s Eve party in Oconto Falls. He was wearing a black T-shirt, jeans and Harley-Davidson boots.

Oconto Falls Police Chief Mike Roberts said he is treating the case as an endangered adult, in part because of how Koebach was dressed and the weather at the time he disappeared.

Koebach is 6-feet, 1-inch tall, about 175 pounds with short brown hair and a mustache. He has hazel eyes and his left ear has two piercings.

Roberts expects to expand his search today using a helicopter, dogs and volunteer search parties. Law enforcement and Koebach’s family conducted the searches, up to this point.

Anyone with information about Koebach’s whereabouts is asked to call Oconto Falls police at (920) 846-4500.

Callers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward by calling Crime Stoppers at (920) 432-7867.

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls Police Department on Tuesday shifted its focus to pursuing potential leads it has received in its search for a teenager who was last seen leaving a New Year’s Eve party shortly after midnight.

The move comes three days after the department, volunteers and family members of 18-year-old Joseph Koebach failed in a search for the teen in the Oconto Falls area.

“We request the public continue to be made aware of the need to forward any information they may have regarding Mr. Koebach’s whereabouts,” Mike Roberts, chief of police, said.

Koebach was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans and Harley-Davidson boots before he went missing early Saturday.

Koebach is about 6-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 175 pounds. He has short brown hair, a mustache, hazel eyes and two earrings in his left ear.

Anyone with information about Koebach’s whereabouts should contact the Oconto Falls Police Department at (920) 846-4500.

Exhaustive search fails to turn up missing man

    By ERIC LaROSE

Authorities are still searching for Joseph Koebach, 18, Oconto Falls, who left a New Year;s Eve party and hasnŐt been seen since.
    Special to the EagleHerald

OCONTO FALLS -- It's been five days since 18-year-old Joseph Koebach disappeared into the night following a party in Oconto Falls, and it's been five long days of searching for area law enforcement and volunteers.

The 6-foot-1-inch Koebach, who has short, brown hair, hazel eyes and a mustache, reportedly left a New Year's Eve party around 12:30 a.m. Saturday wearing only a T-shirt, blue jeans and Harley-Davidson boots, leaving his jacket and cell phone behind.

Witnesses saw him walking away from the party. Other people said they saw a man matching Koebach's description walking on a bridge over the Oconto River between the east and west sides of the city.

Those are the last-known reports of his whereabouts.

Oconto Falls Police Chief Mike Roberts said in a telephone interview that a disturbance at the party involving Koebach was the reason he left, but he would not elaborate on the circumstances.

But since he walked away, the city has searched by land, air and water for Koebach, leaving no stone unturned.

"We've had the DNR and sheriff's department out on ATVs to inspect all of the routes that any family members could come up with where they thought he might be," Roberts said. "We've checked the ice above and below the dam. We've checked the ice shanties. We had the K9 emergency response team come in and check all of those areas again.

"We've had Eagle III come up and do an air search. We've had the fire department and the ambulance participate in the searches. We've lowered the river and raised it attempting to run off some of the ice in that area where he was last seen near the river. We've searched the river area with dogs as well as fire department staff. We've searched the woods, the streets, the alleys and the back yards."

But after five days of intense searching, Roberts announced that the department would be moving into another phase of the investigation.

He said investigators, including members of the Oconto County Sheriff's Department, will start retracing their steps, talking again to people who were at the party with Koebach in an attempt to develop new leads. They are also going to follow up on some tips they have already received.

"We had one call the other day that indicated that they saw somebody on (Jan. 3) getting on a bus in Green Bay wearing a black T-shirt and headphones," said Roberts. "We're kind of assuming that he would have had a jacket by then. Certainly, we're going to be checking up on that. We're fairly busy with the active search."

Roberts added that searches on the ground by volunteers and the man's family would more than likely continue, and another K9 unit has volunteered its services to recheck the areas where Koebach was last seen.

"We're certainly not going to decline any help, but as far as us drawing in outside resources, we've just exhausted the places we can look for the time being," Roberts said. "Let's face it, we can do a grid, search the entire county and the entire state.

"Without having an idea where to look, you can only do so much. ... He could be out there with friends or he could have left. ... It will play out the way it plays out and we'll deal with whatever comes along to the best of our ability."

Anyone with information about Kobach's whereabouts is being asked to call the Oconto Falls Police Department at (920) 846-4500.

Tomorrow,Jan. 8th, the parents of Joseph are asking for anyone to volunteer for a search to begin in the morning. All will meet at the bridge where he was last seen. Since there has been no more sightings or body retrieval from the water they are convinced he is still alive and has been picked up by someone.
If nothing else pray for a solution for the grieving parents. Thank you.

EDIT: The above is taken directly from an interview with the parents just shown local news station

I feel so sorry for his mother. My oldest son was living on the streets for about a year because of cocaine. It was quite scary not knowing where he was and hoping we'd hear from him again from one phone call to the next. Thankfully last 4th of July he was picked up by our local police for being under the influence, and it seems to have turned his life around. So I can relate a little to just how much you dread what you don't know.

I saw this on the news last night. How sad. They are not suspecting foul play.

The body found Wednesday in the Oconto River at Oconto Falls was that of Joseph Koebach, 18, who had been missing since New Year's Eve, the Oconto Falls Police Department said Thursday.

Police found the body near the tissue mill on the river but identification was delayed until after an autopsy Thursday.

Police said the cause of death appeared to be accidental called by hypothermia and submersion in the river. There was no evidence of foul play, they said.

Toxicology results are still pending, police said.

Of course they aren't expecting foul play, they never do. When is someone going to see what is going on up here? Too many men that all fit the same profile are being pulled out of rivers. I have a hard time believing that all of these are accidents. Prayers for his friends and family and all of the other men we've lost in Wisconsin
