NE - Lesbian who reported 'hate crime' attack staged incident
A Nebraska "hate crime" that targeted an openly gay woman and that triggered responses from candlelight vigils locally to Facebook postings of support nationwide was staged by the alleged victim, authorities said Tuesday as they charged the woman with lying to police.
According to the Lincoln Police Department complaint, Rogers, 33, provided information "she knew to be false" with the intent to "instigate an investigation of an alleged criminal matter."

For shame. So hard to get some people to take hate crimes and crimes against gays/lesbians seriously and now this person goes and does this bs.

But Lincoln police learned that Rogers had visited Ace Hardware in LIncoln on July 17 and purchased the same three items. When confronted about the supplies, Rogers admitted to buying all of them except the gloves...But DNA evidence suggested otherwise.

"The University of Nebraska Medical Center found DNA evidence that matched Ms. Rogers' inside the gloves that were left at the scene of the crime," Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong said at a news conference Tuesday.
"There were no male DNA markers found inside the gloves," he said. The day after her visit to the hardware store, Rogers posted the following message on her Facebook page: "So maybe I am too idealistic, but I believe way deep inside me that we can make things better for everyone. I will be a catalyst. I will do what it takes. I will. Watch me."

I guess it just goes to show that gay people are as capable of being bat-$hit crazy as anyone else.
But there are over 300 million people in the United States, so that means there are at least 15 million gay people, or roughly twice the number of people in New York City or Los Angeles County. I guess there have to be a few unbalanced and misguided people in any population that size.

Sadly, this was my first thought when I heard that she had been "attacked". All too often, we find that people who claim to have been victims of a hate crime turn out to have orchestrated the entire incident themselves to gain attention or for other sick reasons.
There ARE people who were true victims of such crimes and I really feel bad for them because their stories are put in doubt because of scam artist like the woman in this case (Ms. Rogers) or people like Tawana Brawley (a young black teen) who stirred up an entire national scandal when she claimed she was attacked/raped/ had racial slurs smeared on her with feces.
When Tawana was proven to be a liar, Sharpeton and Jesse Jackson then accused the police as being part of the attackers and an elaborate coverup.
Incidents like these should be charged to the fullest extent of the law and the people who fake then should be charged with a hate crime as well. These incidents stir up racial tension, pit one group against another and cause major problems between different races, religions and groups.SwampMama
