I'd about decided to let the death of Scott McKenzie (Wiki) go unnoted - his only widely known release, after all, had seemed ingloriously kitschy from the day I first heard it, and his writing credit on the Beach Boys' odious 'Kokomo,' 21 years later, was hardly a plus - but the Guardian's great Jon Savage convinced me otherwise in his essay below:

Scott McKenzie's San Francisco was a hippy anthem with a life of its own
San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)
didn't reflect the particular sound of the city itself. Not that
this mattered – it was great pop and its idealism lives on
