Astronaut Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on moon, dies at age 82 (NBC News)
Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, died Saturday, weeks after heart surgery and days after his 82nd birthday.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and he radioed back to Earth the historic news of "one giant leap for mankind." He spent nearly three hours walking on the moon with fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.

:sigh: RIP Neil. Now you can explore the universe.

The twelve men - space apostles, really - who have walked on the moon's surface:

1. Neil Armstrong
2. Buzz Aldrin
3. Pete Conrad
4. Alan Bean
5. Alan Shepard
6. Edgar Mitchell
7. David Scott
8. James Irwin
9. John W. Young
10. Charles Duke
11. Eugene Cernan
12. Harrison Schmitt

Eight survive. Neil Armstrong was pre-deceased by Conrad, Shepard, and Irwin.

All of these men are true heros. God speed, Mr. Armstrong, you are envied by me and many for having walked on the moon.

Rest in peace Neil. Your landing made my father move us from Ohio in September 69 to the Space Coast in Florida (not knowing the economy was going to collapse - but hey). If you believe in such things, you helped decide the fate of this girl at 8 years old. You're going to be missed.

RIP Neil. :(

If you have the chance, the Neil Armstrong Museum in Wapakoneta, OH is worth a visit.

Thanks for mentioning this, mikkismom. It truly is a nice museum. Wapak is just about 10 minutes to the south of us.

It's been a rough week for us here in this area of Ohio; first we lost Phyllis Diller, now Neil Armstrong. :(

RIP....
