LUDOWICI, Ga. (AP) — Four Army soldiers based in southeast Georgia killed a former comrade and his girlfriend to protect an anarchist militia group they formed that stockpiled assault weapons and plotted a range of anti-government attacks, prosecutors told a judge Monday.

Prosecutors in rural Long County, near the sprawling Army post Fort Stewart, said the militia group of active and former U.S. military members spent at least $87,000 buying guns and bomb components. They allege the group was serious enough to kill two people — former soldier Michael Roark and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Tiffany York — by shooting them in the woods last December in order to keep its plans secret............

One of the Fort Stewart soldiers charged in the case, Pfc. Michael Burnett, also gave testimony that backed up many of the assertions made by prosecutors. The 26-year-old soldier pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter, illegal gang activity and other charges. He made a deal to cooperate with prosecutors against the three other soldiers.

Prosecutors said the group called itself F.E.A.R., short for Forever Enduring Always Ready. Pauley said authorities don't know how many members it had.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia soldier accused of plotting attacks as leader of an anti-government militia group was charged with murder by the Army on Wednesday in the 2011 death of his pregnant wife.

Pvt. Isaac Aguigui of Cashmere, Wash., will face a military hearing to determine if a court-martial should try him in the death of his wife, Army Sgt. Deirdre Aguigui, said Fort Stewart officials in southeast Georgia. The Army also charged Aguigui with causing the death of an unborn child, a boy, when his wife died in July 2011. Military authorities spent nearly two years investigating, but have not released any details about the killing.

"Every victim deserves to have their case prosecuted. In this case it took some time," said Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson..............

It's not clear how Deirdre Aguigui died. Fort Stewart officials and the woman's family have declined to discuss her death because of an ongoing investigation.

Deirdre Aguigui's father, Alma Wetzker, said Wednesday he was told the investigation took time because the first medical examiner couldn't determine a cause of death. He a second medical examiner had to be called to make an official determination. Wetzker wouldn't discuss what the cause of death was ruled to be.

"I'm just finally glad that there's an end to the endless investigation so we can finally start to move on," Wetzker said.

Seems to be one and the same.

I just have a really hard time wrapping my head around stories like these, killing your wife and your own unborn child for insurance money on top of planning to assassinate the president and feeling the need to kill a couple (a 17 year old no less) to protect their militia. That's difficult enough but what on earth were these guys thinking they were going to do after all that, take over the US? IDK, shaking my head.

A federal judge has set a July 2016 trial date in a lawsuit filed against the Army by the parents of a Marysville man and his girlfriend killed by a group of renegade soldiers in Georgia in 2012 to protect a plot to assassinate President Obama...

The lawsuit alleges that, despite suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Sgt. Deirdre Aguigui in July 2011, the Army paid Isaac Aguigui $500,000 in death benefits, which he used to finance his plan, including the purchase of $32,000 in assault-style rifles and handguns from a Wenatchee gun shop...

Aguigui was sentenced to life without parole in March 2014 by a military judge after he was convicted of killing his wife... He pleaded guilty last May to the murders of Roark and York and received two more life terms.

U.S. Army Sergeant Anthony Peden, who served two combat tours in Afghanistan and a third in Iraq before returning home and joining an antigovernment militia called FEAR, was sentenced in Georgia to life in prison for the murder of two teenage sweethearts in December 2011...

But unlike two of his co-defendants, Pvt. Isaac Aguigui and Pvt. Christopher Salmon, who were sentenced previously to life without the possibility of parole, Peden, 28, could be eligible for parole in 30 years.

Heather Salmon is the final defendant in this murder case who hasn’t had their fate decided yet, and for the victim’s family they feel like the end is near. “I’m just so grateful that all the others have plead,” said Thomas. Prosecutors say Salmon was a part of the FEAR militia group...

As for her mother, Kelly Brodel, she’s facing charges of harassing phone calls, terroristic threats and intimidation of a juror.

Salmon took a plea deal. Instead of murder, she pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and street gang terror, and received a reduced sentence.

"30 years, split sentence,” Judge Roger Russell III said. “20 to serve, 10 on probation."
