Missing Niki

Niki Diane Britten ran away from her Albany home one week before her 16th birthday in July 1969.

Her mother, Nancy Mahaffey of Albany, has been looking for her ever since.

[snip]

After Niki ran away in July 1969, her mother says Niki called family friends in September during Labor Day weekend, thinking her grandparents would be there. When they weren’t, she told the friends she was working in New York and doing fine.

That was the last time they heard from Niki.

Long after Niki disappeared, a strange note signed by “Niki” surfaced at Nancy’s parents’ house.

Nancy isn’t sure if it really was from Niki, stopping by her grandparents house when they weren’t home, or if her mother wrote it as a way to make herself feel better.

In it, “Niki” wrote not to worry about her. She said she had “been to a lot of places” and was living with “some people in a big old house.”

She said she “might come home someday but right now I have to do what’s right for me.”

The letter was somewhat disjointed and didn’t sound like Niki, her mother said.

Two months ago I read the article in the Charley Project

Nicki Diane Britten missing since July 16,1969 from Albany Oregon- NamUs MP # 7828

can possibly be

NamUs UP # 5221 - found December 6, 1971 Galloway Township New Jersey
Case number 71-A-388

This is based on an article in the Charley project

Niki Britten ran away from home on July 16, 1969. But an update to the article on September 4 indicates Niki called her grandparents and contacted friends in September 1969 saying she was in "New York, was working and doing ok"

This was also indicated in an article in the Albany Democrat Herald on April 12, 2012

http://democratherald.com/news/local/missing-niki/article_fa991dc6-84c5-11e1-86a2-001a4bcf887a.html

This information is not included in in the mssing person report.

She was never heard from again.

Skeletal remains of a female were found on December 6, 1971 in Galloway Township NJ, around 100 miles from New York City. The postmortem interval was listed as months

The height, weight and age between Niki Britten and the unidentified body are similar.

The face structure is similiar although she is wearing glasses in one of her pictures.

This is just a hunch, both cases are over 40 years old. By matching dentals and DNA between the missing girls relatives and the unidentfied body can this confirm if this is a match or not.

This was already submitted to the Doe Network 2 months ago. Hopefully we will find out soon if it is a match or not.

Oddly, I just stumbled across this UID and came over to see if it had been suggested already. Niki's page in the Charley Project indicates she had relatives in Pennsylvania, so that's another reason she might have gone east. Here's hoping it's a match and we find out soon.

Interestingly,

Charlie Project's account of Niki's case does not mention the letter. I wonder if they believed that the note never contained conclusive evidence that could help in the investigation, or did Charlie Project simply forget to enter that information? Most of the time, Charlie Project has more detailed information about cases than Doe Network.

On a whim, I googled "Nicole Britten" as an image request. There is a woman going by this name who looks an awful lot like these pictures from 1969.

I received an email from the detective investigating this UID in Galloway NJ.

Dentals do not match.

Niki Diane Britten's dental record indicates tooth decay on some of her teeth.

The UID had "perfect" teeth.

Swamp Mountain Jane Doe was discovered 30 miles outside of Sweet Home, Oregon elsewhere in Linn County, OR in July 1976. She was thought to have been at the site possibly as long as ten+ years (date of death estimated to be between 1966-1976). Her age range was originally believed to be 18-40, but a recent dental age estimate could potentially place her a bit younger, like 15-17. She was between about 4'10"-5'2", but only partial, deteriorated skeletal remains were recovered so that is a rough approximation and her weight, hair and eye colors, and hair style were not able to be determined. SMJD also had previously broken her nose during her lifetime. Albany, OR is about 60 miles from Swamp Mountain, OR. Submitted Niki Britten as a potential match to Swamp Mountain Jane Doe via Doe Network. Got a reply back quickly saying that she had been previously submitted as a possible candidate and had been forwarded. No mention made of a previous comparison or rule out however.

In July of 1969, Serial Killer John Norman Collins and his buddy Andrew Manuel were traveling by car from Salinas, California to Ann Arbor, Michigan. The route they took is not known.

Collins (possibly with the help of Manuel) strangled to death a 17 year old girl named Roxie Ann Phillips and dumped her body in a remote area near Carmel, CA. She was killed on 30 June 1969, but her body was not found until 13 July 1969. By then, Collins and Manuel had left the area.

They arrived back in Michigan some time before 26 July 1969, as that is the date that Collins murdered Karen Sue Beineman, age 18, in Ypsilanti.

Between those two known murders, these two killers were on the move. Is it possible that they drove north through Oregon? That is the state where Roxie Phillips had lived before her fatal visit to California.
