Under questioning by Bernalillo County sheriff's investigators, Urruita said he had picked up Diana "two or three weeks ago and squeezed her chest too tight." He said he thought that might have fractured her ribs.

He also told police he picked up his daughter Tuesday morning and cradled her head in his hand and squeezed her head hard enough to hurt her. He said Diana did not cry and he put her back to bed. Urruita told police he did not know why he squeezed Diana's head. He also told detectives that a few days earlier, as he was changing a diaper, he held the baby's legs up to clean her and heard a "pop."

Eliazar Urrutia Quinones, 35, was sentenced to 27 years in prison - the maximum - by state District Judge Doug Driggers.

Urrutia was found guilty in July to three charges of child abuse related to the Jan. 15, 2005 death of his daughter, Diana Urrutia, who doctors testified had several broken bones and died from massive head injuries...

At trial, Arrieta tried to explain Diana's death by pointing to the girl's short but troubled medical history. She struggled with her health since birth, which included 20 days worth of hospital stays for a child that was alive 41 days.
