ND - Sexual Abuse Ignored On Spirit Lake Sioux Reservation

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/49101466...ew_york_times/

The man who plays Santa Claus here is a registered child sex offender and a convicted rapist. One of the brothers of the tribal chairman raped a child, and a second brother sexually abused a 12-year-old girl. They are among a number of men convicted of sex crimes against children on this remote home of the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe, which has among the highest proportion of sex offenders in the country. Federal officials are now moving to take over the tribe’s social service programs, according to members of the tribe, government officials and documents. The action comes after years of failure by government and tribal law enforcement officials to conduct proper investigations of dozens of cases of child sexual abuse, including rape.

I was stunned when I read this! Why is the government ignoring the crimes against these children? Don't Indian children matter to our government? Is this another part of the bigger "Indian problem" of alcohol, crime and despair that we have been ignoring for generations? The children on this reservation are American citizens and deserve the protection of the American government just like any other child in this country. I think the elected officials responsible for this area need to be reminded that theses children are our children. I understand this is a reservation, but does that mean there are no protections available when the local government fails?
It seems to me that there is no more horrid place to be a child in this country than on a reservation. The stories of abuse and neglect are terrible and we normally only hear about it when a child dies.

I've been speaking with a friend from Spirit Lake rez about this. There is a mentality, much like in RieLee's case, where those in power believe themselves to be immune from punishment and censure. Those connected to leadership and, by extension, those affiliated further, are not given the same standards as others. I've been working on a report about the problem of sexual abuse on reservations; the prevalence of it, as well as the aforementioned 'looking the other way'.

But in a letter published last month in The Devils Lake Journal, a local newspaper, tribal officials cast blame on whistle-blowers and a lack of federal money.

“The tribe’s elected leaders and its people are well aware of the gravity and difficult nature of these problems,” the letter said, “particularly because we live with their consequences every day.”

I do disagree with tribal leaders' statements that the onus for the escalation of these numbers is on 'whistle-blowers' and lack of funding.

Fighting abuse begins in the home, within the family. There is a breakdown in the tiospaye in Spirit Lake; this has led to the rising rates of abuse. IMHO

Why is the government ignoring the crimes against these children? The same can be said of children who are not in Indian Country. Child pornography is rampant, sexual abuse against children everywhere is escalating and the punishment against those, Indian and non-Indian, who perpetrate these crimes is too lenient. IMHO

The Social Services Dept is going to take the hit for this, instead of all those who should. HINT *Tribal Leadership* IMHO

FARGO – Officials are preparing for a handover of social services programs from Spirit Lake Tribe to the Bureau of Indian Affairs that will take place on Oct. 1.

An Interior Department assistant secretary issued a statement Monday saying the tribe had asked the federal government to assume control of its social services programs, which have been targeted for improvement for more than a year.

“The decision allowing the BIA to take back the Spirit Lake Tribe’s contracted social services program was made after careful consideration of what was best for all concerned, particularly with regard to the health and safety of their children...
