Town turns tables on school prank

West Branch, Mich. — High school student Whitney Kropp was shocked earlier this month when she was named to the homecoming court.

Her happy surprise turned to humiliation when she learned the reason. The students thought it would be funny if the popularity contest was won by someone who was unpopular.

It's like "Carrie" with a happy ending.

The tables have turned on the bullies.

Glad to hear it turned out well. I had a similar incident happen to me in high school. I was secretly voted upon to be a winner in the class calendar. It was announced on the P.A. After I took the picture and it came out good in the calendar, I was told it was a joke, because they didn't expect me to take such a good picture!!!

That was a nice ending to a bad story. Bullies are cowards.

Bullied West Branch student is ready to shine
By Lauren Abdel-Razzaq
The Detroit News

West Branch — When Whitney Kropp is introduced tonight as part of Ogemaw Heights High School's homecoming court, the spotlight won't just be on her.

The small farming town of West Branch will be thrust further into a national media frenzy — and not everyone is happy about it.Much of the town has rallied around Kropp, with businesses donating a dress, flowers and a salon trip to the 16-year-old sophomore after classmates voted her onto the homecoming court as a joke.

Some residents fear the incident will tarnish West Branch's image; others see it as a lesson on the consequences of bullying. It's left the town overwhelmed...

A really happy ending would be if this girl could get some sort of 4 year scholarship to leave and attend a really classy non snobby or ignorant private school that focuses on some special talent or interest she has instead of beauty and popularity . I hope all the hoopla dossn't affect her remaining school years in a bad way.

Sixteen-year-old Kropp said that she was thankful for the support she received in the wake of her nomination.

She has advice for other people are are the victims of bullying.

"I would tell them to be brave," Kropp said. "Look where it got me."

The Ogemaw Heights High School stadium was packed with students, parents, alumni and supporters. Many dressed in orange — Kropp's favorite color — to honor her at the game.

A number of news organizations also attended the game, including The Detroit Free Press, CNN and The Detroit News.

THANK you for that photo display, especially the Homecoming king who was NOT voted in as a joke.

Students aren't inherently cruel. If they are led, by the administration, to be kind and loving, they will be.

West Branch cheers teen's homecoming triumph
By Lauren Abdel-Razzaq
The Detroit News

West Branch — Whitney Kropp's hometown embraced her Friday night, completing her transformation from bullied to beloved.

Voted on to the homecoming court at Ogemaw Heights High School as a joke, the 16-year-old sophomore was greeted by cheers Friday during halftime of the school's football game against Cadillac, with some supporters even shouting "Whit-ney! Whit-ney!"

Her appearance at the game capped an outpouring of support that built locally and nationally through the week.

"I'm so happy," said the teen. "It's just so much right now for me. I had thoughts about not coming but I actually changed my mind and came out. I just thought maybe I won't have fun. But I'm having a lot of fun right now."

I didn't see much local news yesterday and missed this:

I'm holding back tears, here... a large dam of them. From a girl that was dubbed ugly and strange, all through school I say: You go, Whitney! I am so glad people came to her defense and lifted her up.

By Lauren Abdel-Razzaq

West Branch — Bullied teen Whitney Kropp, who was voted as a joke to homecoming court, attended the school dance with her head held high and with the support of an entire town behind her.

On Saturday, the 16-year-old Ogemaw Heights High School sophomore attended the homecoming dance with her boyfriend. She wore the orange, floor-length feathered dress donated by a local dress shop and two families. Her hair and makeup was done, also donated by a salon in town. News media was not allowed inside the dance...

GREAT for her. I think anyone looking at her pic will see that she is actually beautiful - not in a pitying way, but really. She's a beautiful girl, by any standard.

She is a pretty girl but what in the heck did the "professionals" do to her hair? She looked better in the "before" pic, the dark hair color and short "working mom" cut was a bad idea.

West Branch— Whitney Kropp will not be homecoming queen this year. And she’s OK with that. She doesn’t need the drama.

Whitney was the high school sophomore whose sad story with a happy ending captured America’s attention a year ago.

She was humiliated when students named her to homecoming court as a joke, but this small farm town rallied behind her — paying her way to the homecoming dance.

The story was covered by media across the country. She was interviewed by Katie Couric, chatted with Kid Rock, sought out by Lindsay Lohan. Books and movies were proposed.

“I felt like I was the president,” said Whitney, 17, now a junior at Ogemaw Heights High.

Since her storybook ending, she has lived happily ever after. Sort of...
