Strange that what appeared to be a happy relationship could end that badly that quickly. There is a comment on the link that corrects the wording of her last tweet.

According to a criminal complaint, he told state troopers when arrested that he killed her.

Awful. I wonder if he regularly was abusive and perhaps she wanted to end the abuse?....
The details aren't in yet from what I read:

    CBS/AP) BUFFALO, N.Y. -
Alexandra Kogut's boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, told state troopers that he intentionally killed the 18-year-old college student, according to a criminal complaint. No motive was given.

We knew this family from hockey years ago. I can't say anything remarkable about them, except they were alittle kookie when it came to hockey when the boys were little.Just very into it,but nothing that would indicate that someone would grow up to murder their girlfriend. Just tragic.

I call those psycho eyes. The runaway bride had them too. JMO

Why do a lot of these crimes have ties to Rochester? It just seems like we have more than our fair share of these things. For those who don't know, Brockport is in Monroe County where Rochester is.

I don't know this, but I wouldn't be surprised if the kid was on roids and this was partially a roid rage incident.

I was struck by the similarity between his photo and that of Joshua Packer, who is awaiting trial for murdering the Husted's in Ventura, CA a few years ago. The same empty eyes:

I like this quote from Alexandra's obituary:

Alex lived her life according to the quote by Ida Scott Taylor: "Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering."
My thoughts are with Alex's family and friends who must be devastated.
Rest in peace, Alexandra. You were taken too soon, but clearly you touched the lives of others.

    Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
    Therefore, send not to know, for whom the bell tolls;
    It tolls for thee.
    ~John Dunne

Clayton Whittemore allegedly told police he beat Kogut with his fists, then hit her with a curling iron until she died.
She was struggling to breathe, and “I didn’t want the girl I loved to suffer, so I started beating her with the curling iron until the noise stopped.”

    Unbelievable.

Now he's pleading "extreme emotional disturbance", a form of insanity defense.

    http://www.whec.com/news/stories/S2843407.shtml?cat=565

In a chilling, graphic narrative to investigators in Monroe County, Whittemore allegedly said he 'snapped' and acknowledged beating Kogut after becoming angry over receiving an open container ticket. In the narrative, Whittemore also says the two had argued about, 'stupid stuff'.

"Extreme Emotional Disturbance" is an affirmative defense. Whereas normally, the burden of proof is on the prosecution in a criminal case, here, the defense must prove what they're alleging the defendant's mental state at the time of the crime.

The defense will begin its case next week in the Clayton Whittemore trial. He's the Central New York man accused of killing his girlfriend in her College at Brockport dorm room...

Dr. Paul Gosink, who performed the autopsy, testified about the dozens of injuries to Kogut's body including a broken nose, torn ear, many cuts, abrasions and puncture wounds.

Dr. Gosink said they recovered the tip of a pen and cap of a mechanical pencil from two of those wounds. Gosink says Kogut died from blunt force trauma to the head, and strangulation.

jurors deliberating the fate of accused killer Clayton Whittemore needed only a little more than two hours over two days to return to state Supreme Court and render their decision: guilty of second-degree murder.

In the moments that followed Friday's verdict, as the courtroom's back rows full of reporters sent the news out to the world via their smartphones, Becky Kogut, the mother of victim Alexandra Kogut, tweeted out five poignant words: "Justice for my sweet baby."

Now 22, Whittemore could be sentenced by state Supreme Court Justice Daniel Doyle to 25 years to life in prison at an upcoming hearing on July 16....

We caught up with Whittemore's defense attorney Mark Curley after he left the courtroom. He didn't want to talk to us but was visibly upset with today's outcome. He did say he was surprised with how quickly the jury came to their decision. With only about an hour this morning and an hour yesterday to deliberate. Curley also said he was disappointed with the guilty verdict and spoke for Whittemore when he told us his client is also upset.

The verdict is a big win for District attorney Sandra Doorley. She says this is one of the most brutal and violent murders she's ever seen. That's why she's asking for the maximum penalty for Whittemore which is 25 years to life behind bars.
